Scholarship Chances

Another 10 days has passed since any further discussion on this thread. Just curious if anyone who submitted their Chancellor’s application has received an invite for an interview yet?

As has been said before, students who applied to Pitt by Jan 15 will have their files reviewed for chancellor application and notified and then they have 3 weeks to submit and then when everyone has submitted chancellors apps they will select students to invite for interview. So the earliest I think will be middle of February.

@hailtopitt1787 - can you ask the Chancellor’s office about when the letters are going out?

@FromMD‌, I have spoken to a member of the Scholarship Committee and they told me interviews should happen around end of February/first of March. I am thinking the letters would most likely go out around mid-February, like @mommdc‌ estimated. Best of luck to you all!

Very excited yesterday to have received an email to call Pitt and make arrangements for an interview!

Has any one heard for 2016 in regards to the Chancellor Scholarship?

@Cintimom1 on another thread, hailtopitt noted that people were being notified via mail this week. One person posted on the chancellors scholarship 2016 thread that they’d received a ‘thanks but no thanks’ letter yesterday.

@hailtopitt1787 DS is a high school junior whose loves Pitt and the marching band after several campus visits this year. Unfortunately, we are OOS and would need one of these nice merit scholarships to attend because in-state UMD is only 10K compared with the 28K OOS Pitt tuition).

Unfortunately, his first ACT score is 33 which is on the low end of merit scholarship consideration. Right now (completed 1st half of junior year) he is first in his class out of 360 students with lots of AP classes and band extracurriculars. But does Pitt even consider class rank anymore with so many high schools not even reporting class rank anymore? Thanks, as I’m just wondering if I need to start tempering “hopes and dreams” of DS who has his eye on Pitt instead of UMD like his older brother.

Well if he is a junior then he would still have time to work on ACT prep this summer and maybe increase his score? Pitt will superscore. They are looking primarily at ACT English and math. High class rank is very good to have, but of course there is no guarantee.

@Engineering713, We do consider rank when it is available. Here is the full list of what our Scholarship Committee looks at:

What are the requirements?
Criteria for scholarship consideration include SAT/ACT results, overall grade point average, class rank (if applicable) and strength of curriculum. Activities outside of the classroom such as leadership positions, athletics, community service, etc. are reviewed but given secondary consideration.

In recent years, scholarship eligible students possessed ALL of the following:
minimum SAT score of 1450 (math and critical reading scores only) or 33 ACT (Math and English subscores average)
overall ‘A’ average
top 5% class rank (if applicable) while participating in challenging high school curriculums consisting of AP/IB/Honors courses
record of excellence in various academic and nonacademic activities outside of the classroom

Hope that helps! Best of luck to your son!

It seems that the score of SAT or ACT in concert with GPA (class rank) will determine the outcome of Pitt merit-based scholarship. I would retake ACT or take SAT to have a desirable score for Pitt merit-based scholarship. Your S has time to do this in the coming months and very likely get it due to his current score. In my personal opinion, if your S could get a nice score and keep his current class rank, he pretty much will get a full-tuition scholarship from Pitt the place he has fall in love and is great to study and live for 4 years.

Thanks for the very quick response. I understand why DS has fallen in love with Pitt. Hope to be back in this discussion a year from now with good news. Thanks again.

@hailtopitt1787 My son received an invite to apply for the Chancellor’s scholarship. He did so by the deadline provided and received confirmation that Pitt received the necessary items. I understand that the notifications went out recently (a week and a half ago?). We are on the west coast, so we do expect mail to take a bit, but it does seem like we should’ve received a yes/no by now - right? Would you recommend that he wait or call/email the office?

@missbwith2boys, I would encourage you to wait just a little longer. If you haven’t heard by next week, feel free to follow up. Thanks for your patience!

Best of luck to your son!

@hailtopitt1787, could you please confirm the date for releasing the invitation or rejection of Pitt GAP in medicine? I believe a lots of folks are already nerve-creaking regarding this.

@J2H239, The initial invitations to apply for the Medicine GAP have been sent. Historically, about 10% of the students who are invited to apply are invited to Interview with the School of Medicine. Those interviews take place in March. From there, about 8-12 students are chosen for the program and notified by April 15th.

Hope that timeline helps! You can find more info about the application process in the FAQ on our website: https://oafa.pitt.edu/who-fits-at-pitt/guaranteed-admissions-programs/medicine-gap/

Any chance to receive an out of state waiver to Pitt w/ a 30 ACT, top 5%, all honors AP classes? Not looking for a full ride, just curious if Pitt offers difference in OOS/IS as scholarships. And, do you only get a scholarship if you have a 33 on the ACT?

@ark2018, If you would like to discuss scholarship opportunities in greater detail, please contact our office. Our admissions counselors would be happy to assist you: 412-624-7488 or oafa@pitt.edu.

@hailtopitt1787,

I am happy to report that my D has already been accepted to Pitt. The next step is being considered for merit scholarships.

We just received word about D’s status in the National Merit competition. Would the merit scholarship committee find this information useful, and if so, how should we send in this information?
