Scholarship help, please!

I am an incoming freshman at CIM and I'm going to be a double major in Violin Performance/ Audio Engineering. CIM gave me a bit of merit scholarship but I'm looking for more, especially because I'm a double major and it's going to cost extra. Are there any websites/programs I can apply to perhaps not this yr, but next year for scholarship money?

Your future college’s financial aide office might have a list of scholarships that are available. I know NEC has provided this list on their web page.

But your college might have their own list. Also the financial aide office might be able to guide you toward which ones you are eligible for or have a chance at and assist you with the application process.

I have looked through several scholarship lists similar to this one provided by NEC. Perhaps I have overlooked some large donor, but I have yet to find any scholarship from these lists that would make an appreciable dent in the huge tuition bill charged by conservatories like NEC in the United States. Many of the scholarships are only for composers and singers. A number of the foundations established scholarship amounts back in the time when $1,000 or $2,000 made a difference in going to college.

LifeofSolitude: I didn’t see really any scholarships off that list available to an instrumentalist, unless you are a resident of the specific state or county that the scholarship is designated for.

Hopefully others will have some more positive suggestions.

Good luck in finding the big dollar scholarships. I have been searching for years. My best suggestion to you is start filling out the forms for the $1000 and $2000 scholarships. When you add them all up, they really do matter. Scholarship applications are a lot of work. Make a spreadsheet so you know the deadlines and letters of recommendation you need. There is also typically a community service component. If you don’t have it, use the summer and build your resume. It takes a lot of digging and googling, don’t give up.

I would check out the numerous bulletin boards in the upstairs halls at CIM- they are full of information about different scholarships and programs. Also, ask your studio teacher and the folks in the Audio Eng department. You’ll find that the school itself has some additional scholarships and awards you can apply for in subsequent years, if you meet the qualifications.
