Same. My daughter got the mid term grade email today.
In reading last yearâs thread people reported hearing about financial aid in March. Many said the NPC was not accurate. Many got no aid other than loans.
Admissions told us no exceptions will be made to the new 15 credits per semester requirement (for scholarship recipients) even if they are coming in with over one year of credits! They will allow them to meet the 30 credit hours with summer courses BUT those summer classes would NOT be covered by the UCF scholarship. But since Bright Futures covers summers and UCF requires students to attend summer sessions, it does not seem like it would be too difficult to scale back to 4 classes in the fall or spring and make that up in one summer session. Of course, this would only apply to in state students since Bright Futures would not apply to out of state students.
Does UCF require students to attend summer sessions? I donât think they do.
There is a Florida state requirement that students must have a total of 9 hours taken at some state college or university during summer terms in order to graduate. But Iâm not aware of any UCF requirement that students attend summer â scholarship or not.
Also understand that things like Florida Prepaid and Bright Futures are state programs which have nothing to do with UCF, and UCF has no authority over.
Students who enter any Florida public university with less than 60 credits are actually required to take 9 credits during summers. But you are correct that FL Bright Futures is separate from any university and UCF has no control over those awards.
Important clarification here:
Students who enter with less than 60 hours are required to take a TOTAL of 9 hours during summer terms as a requirement for graduation â NOT 9 hours each summer.
For example, my daughter took 6 hours in Summer 2020 and will take at least 3 in Summer 2021. Then she will be done with summer unless she wants to take something.
AP credits from high school satisfy the 9 summer credit requirement.
So my daughter had to update her SPARK form with her latest grades. Iâm hoping this makes a difference for scholarships. I do have a question. Her school grading system grades a 93.3 and above an A and a 93 a B. I hate that they do it this way. On the SPARK form she had to put in a letter grade. She got a 92 in one of her AP classes. She put down that she got a B because at her school its a B. How does the UCF determine their grades? Does she put it for what their scale says or her school?
@vannevka This is good news for my d if she decides to go to UCf. Do you know if this information about 9 credits during summer can be found on the UCFwebsite?
With a quick search, I couldnât anything. My son is a freshman and under his Knightâs Audit that lists all the graduation requirements, it shows his summer enrollment has been satisfied. I remember back during orientation/registration, I did see where the AP credits had satisfied that requirement but canât recall where i saw that at the time. If I remember or come across it, Iâll let you know.
I have a friend whose daughter graduated last year. She satisfied the summer requirement by taking some community college courses near her home in PA. She just had to have the course approved by UCF prior to taking it. So for those that donât have the AP credits, it is possible to satisfy the requirement without being on campus.
Thank you! I tried a search in the website too. Another parent with OOS student who brought in a lot of AP credits mentioned that the 9 credit summer hours were completed as well but didnât know exactly how, so maybe it was the AP credits.
That could be what it was- D18 had exactly 9 AP credit hours. Her freshman advisor had no idea why her summer requirement was met, but it was. It must be a well kept secret!
Our daughter has satisfied the Summer requirement somehow.
She has only taken two summer courses, but it shows as satisfied on her Knightâs audit. However, when you click on Summer requirement, it does not show what courses were applied to satisfy it.

@vannevka, what was the process for getting a local course approved?
My daughter had a terrible Chem professor (miserable on RateMyProfessor and worse in real life!), so sheâs going to take it again. However, so far, heâs been the only choice.
If heâs the only choice for the summer, sheâll just take it at FIU or MDC locally. FIU has the same course, but what is the approval process?
Jim, i think Florida residents go through FloridaShines.org. I think I would start by asking the registrar office but it probably needs approval by department since they need to determine if the course is satisfactory for credit. My friend didnât act like it was a headache to do.
This is what the website states:
UCF Students Attending Another Florida Public Institution
UCF students who desire to attend another Florida Public institution, to earn credit for transfer back into a UCF degree program, as a transient student are encouraged to complete the âTransient Student Formâ online, which is available on the Florida Virtual Campus website at https://www.floridashines.org under âCollege Studentsâ > âTransferringâ. Students wanting to attend a Florida private institution or an institution outside the State of Florida may obtain a printed form from the UCF Registrarâs Office. The prior permission of the department, school, and college advising office is required to ensure that the courses attempted at another institution will transfer and meet the UCF Degree/General Education Program requirements.
UCF Students Attending a Non-SUS Institution
A UCF degree-seeking student desiring to earn credit at another college or university for transfer back into a UCF degree program must obtain prior transient approval for specific courses from the Dean or Department Chair of his/her respective college or school. Transient approval of courses to be applied to the UCF General Education Program must be obtained in advance from Academic Services (MH 210). Credit earned without prior transient approval may not be accepted. Plus/minus grades will be transferred for course work earned Fall 2001 and after using UCFâs grade point system. Because of graduation certification, students may not take courses in transient status during the term in which they expect to graduate. A student seeking transient status must complete the âTransient Approval Form,â available from the college or school advising office or at https://www.floridashines.org and must submit the completed, approved and signed form to the Registrarâs Office (MH 161). Transient credit cannot be used to reduce the last 30 semester hour residency requirement for a baccalaureate degree, the last 20 semester hour residency requirement for an Associate of Arts degree, or any departmental residency requirements.
Thanks! I did some checking, but obviously didnât look in the right place!
I am hoping this is true about the AP credits being used to satisfy summer hours. My D will have over 40 credit hours coming in as a freshman. She took 9 AP classes and earned college credit mostly through AP but also some dual enrollment. With the Pegasus scholarship, she will have to take 15 hours per semester, so adding 9 summer hours would really drive up her total number of credit hours.
Where did you hear this? It was my understanding that prior courses taken at any other institutions would not count toward the 9 credit summer requirement before college graduation. Hopefully you are correct, but I was fairly sure I had read otherwise.
I also wanted to post an update about scholarship awards. I had been told by admissions that the scholarship committee would be meeting again in mid January and today we saw that the top Provost Scholarship was in our daughterâs portal under To do list on the right side. We are so excited! This will make our decision even easier. She should also qualify for the top Bright Futures scholarship since we are in-state. For those who have been asking about standings for that scholarship, I can share that her SAT score was a 1470, weighted GPA is 5.35 and ranked 2/647. She also is an AP scholar with distinction and will have completed 11 AP classes with this yearâs courses. Good luck to all!
Nothing here yet from UCF about financials. Getting really frustrated.
