Scholarship? PLEASE READ

Hello Everyone,

College confidential was a huge help in me increasing my SAT score almost 260 points. I have another issue at hand. I have finished applying to all my colleges, I did early action for all. I’m trying to be extremely diligent this year and start on scholarships. I plan on getting a job, even though I highly doubt minimum wage can pay a significant portion of my college fees. So now I’m looking for scholarships to apply too. I already know the derivatives. I should go check my church, my school, and local entities such as the county counsel and all that stuff. I also bought the ultimate scholarship book and I use fastweb.com as well. I really want to cut college debt as much as possible, I mean everyone is right? Is there any other books and resources I can obtain to get significant scholarship money? Buying books and memberships is not a problem for my parent and I. Thank you for reading!

You need to be applying to schools that will offer money for your stats. That’s where the real $ are. What is your home state and what are your stats?

Erin’s Dad is correct. Please listen. The majority of merit scholarships (and financial aid) comes from the schools.

And if you qualify for financial aid.

There are CC people who can give you good advice!

If you need money to pay for FOUR years of college, then your method is wrong. Those places you mention are for small awards for FRESHMAN year only.

How would you pay for the otther years? or do you plan on dropping out after frosh year? (I assume not).

If you and your family are expecting you to get scholarships to pay for college, then you will likely fail big time with that strategy.

So…you need to apply to the SCHOOLS that will give you large or huge awards for your stats.

You can only expect to earn/save/pay about $5k per year for college.

How much will your parents pay each year for college??

have you had your parents run the NPCs on schools’ websites? If not, do so.

Keep in mind that if a school gives you need-based aid, then outside awards may just reduce those…and your parents will still be expected to pay the EFC.

Do not underestimate how helpful your job earnings will be for extras.

Are you saying you will rely on scholarships for a significant part of your codt? Is that the main point you are making, that you can’t afford the schools you are applying to?

Scholarship search is time intensive and will depend on various qualifications you have. We don’t know those and aren’t going to be searching for you. You have already missed some deadlines. But search and apply by all means. I don’t know if you are getting need aid, but be aware that outside scholarships will not replace your EFC unless they are so large as to replace need aid first. But they may replace student loans, depending.

Approximately a 3.3 GPA (messed up my 9th grade year and 10 grade year bad, idk how I got it above a 3.0) and my SAT score is a 1100 (2 part). I applied to mostly HBCU’s where I knew I could get money as well as some PWI’s that give good money to black minorities

Merit aid with your statistics is going to be difficult; but perhaps not impossible.

Here is a website: https://www.■■■■■■■■■■/scholarships/. For a list of merit scholarships offered by different schools, go down about halfway and look for the heading “Find Merit Aid Scholarships.” Perhaps some of the schools that you have applied to will be listed.

The following schools may give you some merit money: SUNY Potsdam, the University of Tampa (one girl I know was accepted into honors and received over $10,000 with lower scores and a slightly higher GPA), The University of New Haven (students with your profile received money last year), Rider University. Last year Rider gave merit $ to students with lower GPA/scores than you. Good luck!

What is your weighted GPA? Where do you live, and where do you want to go for college?

A few of the regional/directional state colleges in IL, Indiana and Ohio may give you merit aid.

I would check the smaller, regional public schools within driving distance of you. Some of them will give merit aid to students with higher test scores and average GPA, if you took demanding high school classes, too.

Also check small liberal arts colleges - places like Wittenberg and Ohio Wesleyan in Ohio. (But they may still be more expensive than state schools for a 3.3…)

I agree with others to try and get a merit scholarship FOR ALL FOUR YEARS from the school itself. Many schools will give you this scholarship automatically with your acceptance there. With some of them, like SIU-Carbondale and SIU-Edwardsville in IL, a higher test score will make you eligible for an interview or competition that could get your even more merit aid.

my statistics are not the best but God is, I’ll be fine. Thanks for the advice, stay tuned.
