Scholarship Question - Help!

Hi,

My high school had a seniors awards ceremony. I found out I received $300 for a scholarship I applied to, $325 for another, and $100 from a bank for academic recoginition (In which I did not apply for). All checks are made directly in my name, not my college. I want to keep the $100 for the orientation fee that I am going to attend and called my college's office to see if this was OK. They told me, that since the check is not made out to them, that they can't make me send it in. So, I am wondering if I should just not bother sending in the other checks to my college and just use it to pay for college bills when I receive the bill from them. Or is it better for me to send it in? Would they need to know how much I received?

I would appreciate it if anyone can give me an answer.

Thanks!

i wouldn’t give the money to them because they may just lower your university grant if they gave you one. this way, you can put it towards your efc.

If the donor doesn’t have a problem with you using it for college expenses at your discretion, then go ahead and use it as you see fit.

That was the same sort of response D got from her college - the larger ($1K+) scholarships made out to both kid and college must be reported and turned in. She was allowed to keep the smaller ones she received at awards night.
