so I just found out today that I got one of the one time national merit $2500 scholarships....am i also eligible to receive a national merit scholarship from vandy???
because that would be pretty nice...

nope, i am hoping that i will not be a winer... i dont know if vanderbilt has their own rules, but the rules said that you can only receive one scholarship, so if u got 2500, u cant get the 5000

from the website:
http://www.vanderbilt.edu/admissions/Archive02262007/meritaid.htm

National Merit and National Achievement Scholarships are awarded to students designated as Finalists by the National Merit Corporation. Finalists who indicate Vanderbilt as their first choice school will receive a minimum of $5000 per year in total merit scholarships at Vanderbilt, from all sources. If a National Merit Finalist receives another Vanderbilt merit scholarship that exceeds the $5,000 minimum guarantee, they will still receive a National Merit award of $2,000 above and beyond the amount of any other scholarship.

I interpret the minimum of $5000 per year from all sources to be that if you get $2500 from NM you will get another $2500 from Vandy to meet the $5000 minimum (and I think the $5000 minimum is a per year thing where the NM $2500 is a one time thing). Better make sure you designated Vandy as your first choice!

Actually, I called Vanderbilt and they told me that as long as you change it to your first choice by the deadline, you still qualify.

azngrlinnyc, if i've understood the nm stuff correctly, you have to accept the award to actually receive it. so, if you are mailed an offer for the one time national merit award, you can always turn it down.

I'm sure Vanderbilt will accomodate you. They say that those who reach National Merit Finalist status and designate Vanderbilt as their first choice will get a minimum of $5,000 per year. So if Vanderbilt doesn't give you another scholarship, you would presumably get the $2,500 award from NM and $2,500 from Vanderbilt the first year, and $5,000 from Vanderbilt thereafter. I was in a similar sort of situation, and Vanderbilt was very generous. You really don't have to worry about getting ripped off with NM, I think. Just remember to designate your first choice well.

Please check with the Admissions office on this situation. I seem to recall that Vanderbilt rewards the one-time NM scholarship winners so that they won't be penalized financially for taking that award. (In other words, you don't have to decline that award--I think they make up the difference if you list Vanderbilt as your first choice). However, things could have changed in recent years, so the best thing to do is call. Don't rely on advice from the board in this instance.

When is the deadline to change your first choice school?

That information should be listed in the National Merit Scholarship info they send out to you. There should be a card you send in, and I think there is a way to change your first choice if you have sent it in already.

Yeah I know, but it's really confusing and seems to be saying different things.

The absolute deadline is April 24th. They must have it by the end of that day. So, if you wait that long, you will have to fax them the information. Check the materials you were sent for the fax number, or the address if you are ready to act early enough.

to N2Karaoke: tats good to hear, tkz, id dint know that lol
