Scholarship Questions

He is taking the ACT today, so we shoudl know if a few weeks. He took it last year, as a sophmore, without practicing at all and got a 25. For this one he has done about 6 practice tests (Xiggi Method) and for the last 3 he has brought the score up to 34-36. He is looking forward to a 33+ score.

Thanks for the contact, I’ll contact MS. Bridgers and post her answer.

Also have your son take the SAT. Bama really only uses the Math + CR to figure scholarships and such.

yes, have him take both the SAT and ACT. some kids do a good deal better on one than they do on the other.

Yes, he might take it March. We wanted to have it in May but fits right in the middle of AP exams… If not there is a June 5th date too that he can sign for too.

If my son takes the SAT/ACT after being offered the collegiate scholarship(based on last score) and brings up his score, would UA consider the latest test? He has never taken the ACT. We live in Virginia and VA schools only want SAT. He has thought about taking the ACT. His 1270 (reading/math) SAT really doesn’t reflect how good a student he is. 4.4 GPA/tied for 3rd in class, lots of AP credit, etc…THANKS!

Bamafana…

Is your son a current senior?

Yes he is.

For this years seniors, raising test scores now won’t help as UA’s deadline for this has passed. It’s interesting that VA only wants SAT scores as the ACT and SAT are supposed to be accepted everywhere (there is a conversion chart if the school needs it).

If taking the ACT, remember that selected states have a September test date. If your state doesn’t, consider taking it in a state that does.

Virginia schools do take the ACT. However, probably more students do the SAT…

See below from UVa’s website…

STANDARDIZED TESTING - http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/apply.html</a>
All students must submit either the SAT or the ACT with Writing.
In addition, first-year applicants are strongly urged to provide the results of two SAT II subject area tests. Students whose first language is not English or who have attended an English speaking school for less than two years are required to provide evidence of their English proficiency by submitting the results of the TOEFL or the IELTS. Our ETS code (for sending SAT, SAT2, and TOEFL testing) is 5820. Our ACT code is 4412. Please note that we do not accept rushed scores

Virginia schools do take the ACT, but we were told by our guidance dept. that all Virginia college PREFER SAT.

I know that GC’s make such statements.

The GC at our kids’ school made the claim that southern schools prefer the ACT. But, for admission and scholarship purposes, it really doesn’t make a difference. Some schools get more ACT scores or get more SAT scores, but when schools are accepting apps from all 50 states, they know that students from certain regions will have one type more than the other.

When the GC again made this statement at the recent “junior parents” meeting, a parent challenged her on that point, and she had to admit that no child was at a disadvantage by having one test over the other. Her statement had just been based on the fact that the “majority” of the kids had the ACT score.
