Can anyone give me some more information on additional scholarships? We are Virginia residents and my son has his heart set on UA. I was born in B’ham and most of my extended family lives in Alabama. He has been accepted and has been offered the collegiate scholarship which as everyone knows is $3500 a year. Will not go far on the costs of out of state tuition. My older son is applying to law schools also, so we really need as much help as possible!!! My son will be in the college of arts and sciences. He has applied to the honors college as well as UFE. He is tied for 3rd in his high school class with a 4.4 GPA and had a 1270 SAT. Any advice would be appreciated!!!

The College of Arts and Sciences offers their own scholarships. Department majors do, too.

What is your son’s major? Your son’s SAT is like a 28 ACT which is a desirable score, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a dept scholarship.

I would also contact the Honors College to see if they have any scholarship opportunities.

The COA for OOS at Bama is $31k. However, that can be reduced by choosing the standard dorms (saves about $2500). That COA also includes personal expenses, which also is a controllable expense (some parents have their kids earn money for their personal expenses.

How much can you afford to spend? Will your son take a Stafford Loan? Will he work in the summer to contribute? Will he work part-time during the school year (say 8 hours a week) for pocket money?

I’m in the same boat… Out of state, high GPA and 28 ACT. UA is my first choice but money will determine where I go.

M2CK, do you know of any students who have received a university scholarship + college and departmental scholarships? What about the Alumni Association awards? If I can get a combination of these scholarships to total about 2/3 OOS tuition, I will enroll. You think this is possible?

Thanks,
OG-J

Also, does UA check updated transcripts with grades from this past semester?

^^^

What did you put down as your major?

Yes, I do know kids who got the smaller university scholarships and have gotten nice scholarships from their departments or colleges (such as College of Arts and Science). However, not all dept have the same amount of money to give away.

Since you have an ACT 28, you have a good chance.

Did you send your updated transcript? Is your GPA higher now?

Right now, departments are reviewing applications for scholarships. I don’t know if they just use the info that is written on the apps, or if they have something online that has the latest info.

What is your total COA college budget per year? $20k per year? more? less?

My major is Political Science. From what I can tell, the department and the College of A&S give out a few scholarships I should qualify for. My cumulative GPA went up this semester, so that should help a little bit.

As far as college budget, I’m looking to stay close to $17k a year. I’m willing to get a job to make up the difference.

I know the university merit scholarships don’t look at senior year grades, but others may. I agree that you would stand a good chance of getting additional money. With your current scholarship and some cost cutting measures, you are about $5k away from your target number (very rough math). I could see it happening, but I obviously cannot guarantee anything.

SEA_Tide…

Besides the following, what other cost-cutting features would you suggest?

Choosing less expensive housing,

I know that after the first year, a student can choose less expensive meal plans.

A student can also not use their Dining Dollars and then ask for a refund at the end of the year.

Sell back unneeded books

Try to become an RA (for free housing)

What else? :)

Of course, a person can always try to work full-time in the summer and earn as much as possible. And, possibly work part-time during the school year for pocket money.

You basically listed all the options besides not having a car or car insurance and staying for fall and Thanksgiving breaks. Moving off-campus for the later years and trying to graduate early could also save money. If there is a will, there is a way, the way just may be one that’s not favorable. There are times when it makes sense to spend a little more money than the minimum.

mom2kids you are a great resource! My son is listed as pre-law major. Probably will be a History or Political Science major. How do we go about applying for a dept scholarship? I appreciate all of your advice. He has applied for Honors College and UFE. Thanks in advance!

My son is listed as pre-law major. Probably will be a History or Political Science major. How do we go about applying for a dept scholarship?

I hope it’s not too late to put his real major.

Since he didn’t list a major (pre-law isn’t a real major), he needs to go to mybama, academics tab, and look down the left side column to declare his major as poly sci or history ( I don’t know which might have a better chance. Maybe Poly Sci).

Right now, he’s not eligible since he’s not listed as having a major that is associated with a department or college.

There’s no formal application process for these other scholarships. it’s all part of the original scholarship app. If he had listed History or Poly Sci on that, he would have been considered.

Right now, all you can do is change it on MyBama and maybe contact Scholarships about the change and ask for their advice. Hopefully it’s not too late.

I think pre-law, just like undeclared, is considered part of the College of Arts and Sciences. However, m2ck is right that additional scholarships are nearly impossible unless he lists a “real” major.

^^^
It’s too hard to tell. I wouldn’t assume that. There is no pre-law major. Therefore, a pre-law student could be in the Business School, C of Human Environmental Sciences, C of Communication, etc. There’s no reason for College of Arts and Sciences to award a scholarship to a student who may not ever be in that College.

That’s why he needs to list a real major. I hope it’s not too late.

M2CK the reason why I chose pre-law on the major list is because they didn’t list political science??? I didn’t understand that when we were filling out the application. I just went back to change his major and it still isn’t listed??? Any advice???

Political science isn’t listed???

what?

Is International Studies listed?

This is what I’ve found in the undergrad catalog…

The Dept of Political Science offers two majors, one in political science and another in international studies…

This is crazy…unfortunately, since I don’t have an incoming freshman, I can’t look up the majors list on the change link on mybama.

Can someone with an incoming freshman, log onto mybama and look at the list of majors in the change major area. It’s in the Academic Tab, left column.

They do have international studies listed and PRE-political science??? Never heard of that before???

pre-Political Science?

I wonder if Poly Sci does things like the B-school…anyone know?

well, for now, put pre-poly sci and contact the school tomorrow and ask. I’d call the poly sci dept.

I think it’s Pre-Poli Sci for all freshmen. My application says the same thing.

What about scholarships for Exercise Science/Human Performance in the Department of Education? My daughter has similar stats - 1280 SAT, top 8% of class, 3.8 UW, 4.6W - already received $3500/year scholarship form UA but hoping for something from more from her departmental college to make this a reality as not only is it still expensive for OOS, she’s also a twin.

My son received an acceptance letter from the College of Arts and Sciences. They listed Dr. Ann Webb as the contact person. Do you think I should call her and see if he will be eligible for the additional scholarship money or if he should change his listed major??
