Alumni Association Scholarship - Alumni Honors Scholarship

I have a few questions regarding the alumni scholarship process. Specifically regarding the Non Membership Based Scholarship

ALUMNI HONORS SCHOLARSHIP – four-year scholarship awarded to entering freshmen; minimum 30 ACT (1330 SAT) and 3.0 GPA; $8,000 per academic year.

Does the students parent or grand parent need to be a graduate of the University of Alabama?

What is the selection process? Is it as simple as if you meet the criteria then you are awarded the scholarship? Or is it that these are the minimum requirements and these requirements must be met before a student is considered.

When is notification of these awards announced?

Thank you for you help

I emailed the scholarship group last week concerning the National Alumni Association Crimson Scholarship (this may be different than the one you are referring to). Here is the response I received - 'The Crimson scholarship does not have the criteria to have a parent or grandparent be an alum of UA. However, you do need to check the box to self-identify yourself to let us know that you want to be considered for that scholarship.

Please be sure you meet the December 1, 2010, deadline for being admitted to the University. You might want to make sure that your daughter completes the scholarship application as completely and distinctly as she can because we do base this scholarship on leadership positions/qualities, as well as extra curricular activities, volunteerism, etc. We choose well-rounded students, and this scholarship is very competitive starting with hundreds of students and narrow it down to ten to fifteen students.'

Hope that helps!

If someone gets a Crimson Scholarship, I’d like to know. I wonder what stats are considered.

When were these scholarships awarded in the past? I’m assuming nothing will come over spring break, but I’d like to know ASAP.

I imagine that they will get awarded sometime between March 22 - April 1.

What I’d like to know is what the stats are for the recipients. I’m guessing that the stats would have to rather high…such as kids who probably would be a NMF if they weren’t from a state that has a high cut-off…or something like that.

Of course, the PSAT wouldn’t be looked at. What I mean, for example, the kid who has a 2250 or ACT 34, but didn’t make NMF. I’m just speculating, but since they only award a few of these, it would seem like the recipients would have to have super stats. Thoughts?

Mom2, I bet they wouldn’t give one to a NMF so that they could spread the wealth a bit, don’t you think?? Like the Academic Elite seems to (mainly?) go to Fellows who did not make the NMF. Just a guess.

Bikedad

I agree… you may have misread my post. I don’t think they would give it to a NMF.

I think they’ll give it to a student who WOULD be a NMF if he wasn’t from a high cutoff state.

There are kids going to Bama who had high PSATs, but their states have high cutoffs, so they aren’t NMF. Therefore, they can only get Presidential. They may have very high SAT or ACT scores (ACT 34 or SAT 2250), but they still only get Presidential. So, maybe those kids will get the Crimson…Don’t ya think?

^ pick DS, pick DS!!
he’s one of those kids, high PSAT and ACT but not NMF in our state
that would be so cool…

LOL…

My point about the “high PSAT, but not NMF” can’t really count because schools don’t see a child’s PSAT. However, what I meant is that there are such kids from those states who also have very high SAT or ACTs and Bama needs a way to extra “reward” them, too. I can see it also being given to kids from states where Bama doesn’t have a lot of students.

What state are you from?

What is your son’s ACT?

We are hoping to qualify for this when DD applies in the fall. We are from TX with ACT 33.

My son’s friend received a Crimson scholarship a year ago. He hails from Alabama (moving there just before starting high school). He has not a NMF or Fellow, but he had some great stats/GPA. So that goes along with what you have been saying, M2CK.

Shamrock…Is your D a likely NMSF?

If not, I would have your D take the ACT again (and maybe take the SAT), because I think having an ACT 34+ would put her in a better position. Because of CBH and UFE, Bama has a decent number of ACT 33s.

And, if she’s strong in the Math section of the ACT, then definitely have her take the SAT. I’m not sure if Bama just looks at M+CR for Crimson, but if it does, then her M+CR score may end up higher than an ACT 33 equivalent.

Unfortunately she will not be a NMSF. The TX cutoff is around 217 and she will be just under that. She has a GPA of around 4.2 and is either number 1 or 2 in her class. She has taken both the SAT and ACT twice (and I was told that she was done with those!!). She got a 1430 (best of the two) on the SAT M/CR and 31/33/35 on ACT M/Eng/Reading with an 11 on writing.

Hmmmm…

I wonder what the criteria is and who does the deciding?

I would still have her take the ACT again next fall…she doesn’t have to send the score if she doesn’t want to. It’s just one Sat morning. At that point, she’ll have a bit more knowledge under her belt, and she might get to that ACT 34 point.

We are going to try, that’s for sure! UA is #1 on her list. We were treated very well when we visited.

Illinois with a 34ACT - Nat. Merit Commended which unfortunately doesn’t mean squat (except for the proud mom thing! )

With a 34ACT w/o being a national scholar, I would think he’s be a strong contender! :)

you’d think so, but then who can say? He’s my top contender for #1 son
All he needs is an Eagle Scout to be reviewing the apps.

(wait… check that, don’t say anything to #2 son…)

is there a sep app for this?

It doesn’t appear so, the website says just complete the university-wide scholarship app.

(sorry in advance for the big cut/paste from the UA website) _____________________________________________
The scholarship application for entering freshmen and transfer students is a consolidated electronic application used campus-wide by all departments including the Alumni Scholarship Program and its alumni chapter network. The information submitted is centrally processed by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions/Scholarships. A centralized campus-wide process eliminates the need for separate applications. A complete application is defined as submitting the UA On-line Application for Admission at apply.ua.edu, an official high school transcript, ACT and/or SAT scores reported to UA by the testing agency, and an admission fee.
