Scholarship Usage

My son was accepted EA to SHU and was the recipient of a University Scholarship ($22500/yr.) As a NJ resident he can also take advantage of the SHU program that matches Rutgers tuition ($10,104/yr). With that in mind, can he apply the remaining balance of his annual University Scholarship towards Room & Board?

I am so glad you posted this, my daughter just received the same award, and I have the same question. We live on LI, so I want to know if the award will cover all as well.
I called the school and asked, but noone could answer my question exactly.
Did you find any more information?

No…I haven’t found out yet. Other schools clearly state that a merit award can only be used for tuition, but the SHU award doesn’t state that. I will have to call there next week to get clarification.

HI JMCollege, I spoke to someone at SHU yesterday, apparently the merit award is not the
tuition match. But as per the person in admissions, the award is more than the reduction in tuition. I did work out the numbers, it is a bit less.
So take the award off of the tuition + the R&B, and that is the amount you owe, minus the FA…hope that helps.

Wow…you have really cleared this up! My daughter was also a recipient of that scholarship…do you think your children will attend???

Stachu, I think she will. We need the assistance and the campus is really pretty and fits her needs. She is still waiting for other schools acceptance letters, but we are definately leaning towards SHU. What are your thoughts?

My daughter also received the University Scholarship for $22,500 however, I was informed today that she must choose ONE - the tuition deduction for meeting the criteria of 1200 SAT (Math/Verbal) and top 10% of her class OR the scholarship for $22,500 - NOT both. I think we will be looking at other offers! Good Luck to you and yours!

Thank you for clarifying. Son got accepted with 20,000 scholarship and was thinking if we can combine the Rutgers tuition match with the scholarship. I guess he will be going to Rutgers.

My son will likely look at other options. SHU got good publicity out of the Rutgers match but if your student is a better applicant the SHU deal isn’t all that great. We are disappointed with SHU.
