My daughter will be a junior next year in college....woohoo halfway there. LOL. Her freshmen year she received scholarships through her high school and one from my husband's employer....her sophomore year she only had the one for my husband's employer but when asked if she expected a scholarship from the college financial aid department she said no because it is not gauranteed and she was not sure if she would be getting it....Well, it was awarded to her for $3300.00 for the year. It messed up everything for the autumn semester...the college sent her a refund check and then a week later they took away her subsidized loan because of the scholarship...had her account in arrears and threatened to throw her out of school. Thankfully, she got everything straightened out.

So my question is "What should she say when asked if she anticipates any scholarships?" this scholarship is not automatic...she has to apply and the first year she was awarded $2200.00. Deadline to apply is in April and she will find out over the summer if she is awarded the scholarship and the amount of the award. She has also applied for scholarships through the school but I don't hold out much hope of her getting any help from them.

I just want to avoid the trouble we had this Autumn. Should she say she is expecting $4000.00 in scholarships just to cover the employer amount, it probably won't be that much? She needs to get the maximum Stafford loans allowed even if they end up being unsubsidized instead of subsidized. Will that avoid the trouble that we had this year?...She got it straightened out for the Autumn and right now for the Spring quarter it says no charges are due but that financial aid is under review.

My husband and I are struggling to pay for her college (poor planning on our part, I know) but any scholarship money that she is awarded helps lessen our burden...when she picked the university she knew that she would be expected to take out the maximium in Stafford loans....that is all the loans she is taking...we have not co-signed any private loans for her and we don't intend to co-sign. We did take out a Parent Plus loan for her first year and are hoping to avoid taking out any more loans. It was in the amount of $10,000.00.

Sorry this got lengthy and hopefully it makes sense.
