does anyone know if it is possible to negotiate for more scholarship money at McGill once they let you know what you have received?

Generally Canadian schools are not very open to negotiations regarding scholarships. Because tuition is much lower than at American schools and because the Canadian schools’ resources are usually very tiny compared to many American schools, there just isn’t much wiggle room. Thus I never hear anyone use the term negotiation with Canadian schools (at least not with music or academics–occasionally with athletics).

However, it doesn’t hurt to let your child’s intended studio teacher know that finances are an issue; at minimum, I would ask them if there is any possibility of extra money. They can sometimes go to bat for you if there is any scholarship money that becomes available.

I should have added that I think it is still worth calling McGill about scholarships. I would tend to make the call more of a request for further information about scholarship/financial assistance rather than as an attempt to negotiate. Given that McGill gets more US applicants than any other Canadian school, they are probably accustomed to lots of inquiries about scholarships and financial aid.
