Hey, I was wondering how common non-need based scolarships are, and some of the different qualifications for them. Have you heard of students getting a full-ride? Does it effect your chances being an American student??

I'm sorry, but I really don't know how common non-need based scholarships are. I know that to get a full ride you had to have already applied separately. I also know that McGill doesn't like giving American students scholarships, for some reason.

It's my understanding that McGill just plain doesn't give Americans money...

...however, they have a good AP policy. Up to 30 credit hours, the equivalent of a full year of study, and I've heard that many faculties will let up apply AP credit to a major. I guess one could complete a Bachelors in three years at McGill if you have enough AP credit; I don't know, there might be a string attached somewhere. But if you could graduate in three years, that would be worth $20,000, and the fact you'd go to Graduate school sooner.

I'm sure someone is going poke a hole in my comments.

I've heard the same thing from a student at McGill. The tuition is also much cheaper without financial aid than American schools of the same caliber, which is nice.

Getting an academic scholarship is extremely hard for Canadian students, so I'm sure that American's get them very rarely, or not at all. If you come from Ontario, your average has to be at least 92% (keep in mind that you can't get 100% in the Ontario curriculum. The highest it goes is 98%, which is obviously very difficult) to even be elegible for a scholarship. One of my high school's grads last year had a 94,4% average and didn't get a scholarship...

There are scholarships for Americans - Minimum requirements and means of applying are listed here http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/undergrad2007-08/scholarships/

momfromme is correct--you can apply--but do not count on any scholarships from McGill. They are few and far between for US residents. My d. was more than qualified and did not get either the large ($10,000) or small ($3000)
award. That is okay, just be aware that you cannot count on a scholarship
to make up the financial need.

Cool... thanks! Your responses have been very detailed and helpful. I have one question tho... if my school doesn't rank, but i do have above an A- average, as well as well above the sat cutoff (780, 780)... does that still leave me elligible. McGill Dad, I know that you cannot rely on getting a scholarship, but i was just curious. Thanks again

So many high schools dont rank anymore for very good reasons. I am sure that not having a formal class rank will not effect your ability to get a scholarship in any way. (Like that double negative?)

US students do not have much chance of getting financial aid. However the school's AP credit policies are very liberal. My son received 15 credits, or one full semester, for his 3 AP classes. That had a significant impact on his overall tuition bill.

I'd also point out that we found living expenses -- rent in particular -- lower than in any other similar NA city.

I emailed the scholarship office asking when the major scholarship decisions were going to be made. They said a committee would decide on these for US applicants during the last week of March.

They said:
"In terms of our major entrance scholarships, because of the larger application process (supporting documents) we actually needed to set up a committee that
will review all eligible files and basically choose the winners. This committee will only be holding their selection meeting close to the end of this month, therefore the scholarship decisions for all Int'l/USA applicants will be made by the last week of March."

Hello, everybody. My scholarship status just changed from "Out For Review" to "Scholarship Preliminary Offer $5000" today. I'm American and my stats aren't astronomical (I posted them on the official decisions thread). Good luck to anyone else waiting to hear.

Many congrats, ardiar!!

Congratulations, Ardiar. It's rare for non-Canadians to get scholarships! I guess they DID make some decisions before the end of March after all. We're still waiting to hear. (that is, my daughter and I)
