Scholarships Available

What scholarships are available at schools like UF, FSU, USF, UCF, and UM if I have a 31 ACT (going to retake again) 4.8 weighted GPA and 3.6 unweighted? Thank you

Not likely to get a merit award from UF.

USF has a website that shows the automatic merit scholarships, based on GPA and Test scores.

http://www.usf.edu/admissions/freshmen/admissions-scholarships/

UCF can also be generous with merit awards, but they don’t have an “automatic” award like USF. Go to the UCF forum, on CC, and do some research, you’ll see folks that posted their stats and what level of scholarships they received. Do the same with FSU.

Good Luck!

@Gator88NE Am I likely to receive anything from UM?

Not merit based aid, but they may offer need based aid. Use the net price calculator to get an idea…

If you are from Florida, you can use BF at UM and you’d get a resident grant. It was $3300 last year, but I’m not sure what it will be going forward. It’s 40% of instate tuition.

@twoinanddone Oh thanks! Very helpful since I have the highest level of BF. Do I get it every year or just once in the beginning?

FRAG (Florida Resident Access Grant) is a state sponsored program, so it’s available at UM or other Florida private colleges. It is renewable on a yearly basis (has a GPA requirement, like Bright Futures).

@Gator88NE wow thank you!

@Gator88NE Do you know if the FIU Presidential scholarship is stackable? Like if I already have full tuition from Bright futures but FIU also offers full tuition that I’m qualified for what happens?

@Gator88NE Is my unweighted gpa too low for uf? People keep telling me it’s too low and I need at least a 3.75

Usually the merit based scholarships, offered by the Florida public universities will stack with BF (which is funded by the state). Check with FIU to make sure that’s the case here.

Your GPA is a bit low, but students get in with lower. The average “weighted” GPA for the middle 50% of admitted students was 4.3 to 4.6. UF calculates weighted GPA different from your school district. With UF it’s =0.5 points for honor classes (pre-IB, Pre-AICE), and +1.0 points for Dual Enrollment, IB, and AICE classes. You’re weighted UF GPA will be something less than 4.6.

If your UF weighted GPA is a 4.1 to 4.2 and you’re in the top 10% of your class, UF may be a slight reach. If your weighted GPA is 4.0 or less, and you’re not in the top 10% of your class, then UF is a reach.

With UF’s holistic admissions, if you have very strong EC’s, that can help counter a low GPA, but only up to a point.

Good Luck!

@Gator88NE Are you saying my unweighted is pretty insignificant in comparison to my UF GPA? So my chances are still pretty good? You said my UF GPA will be a little less than a 4.6 which is over 4.1 and 4.2. I was in the top 13% before the last semester but idk what it is now that school is out but I’m guessing it’s gone up. Along with my test scores and my strong EC’s (they’re nothing crazy but pretty unique) it shouldn’t be a reach should it? Then the only thing I’ll be missing is a well written essay.

Your UF gpa will be less than 4.6, you will have to calculate it. Only use academic classes; +0.5 points for honor classes (also pre-IB of pre-Aice) and +1.0 points for AP, duel enrollment, IB and AICE classes. Since the most extra points you could earn is +1.0 points the highest your UF weight GPA could be is unweighted GPA (3.6)+1.0=4.6. Since you didn’t take 100% AP classes your gpa will be something less.

UF will be a bit of a reach. It it’s hard to tell with holistic admissions since a lot of other factors come into play.

Good luck!

@Gator88NE Ok I’ll calculate it tonight and I’ll let you know. Is there anything I can do at this point to increase my chances or is it too late?

Retake the ACT and keep up with you EC’s. And try to have some fun your senior year (while keeping your grades up)!

@Gator88NE Will do. Waiting for my July ACT score to come in. Expecting a 32/33. What should I be going for? Also for UF GPA, how much boost do I give myself if I get a B in an honors class? 0.375?

On the test, you want to score as high as you can. 33 or higher would get you into the top 25% range, which is good.

Honors is worth +0.5 points.

A “B” in an honors class would be worth 3.0 (b) + 0.5 =3.5 points
A “B” in an AP class would be worth 3.0 (b) + 1.0 = 4.0 points.

@Gator88NE Ok so rip to me and my dreams and my chances to uf because my recalculated uf gpa is only a 4.2352 so 4.2 which is really low for UF and my test scores are really low too :frowning:

A 4.23 isn’t that bad.

It’s in the middle 50% range of admitted students.

You definitely should apply. It’s not a “safety”, and you should apply to other schools, but you’re competitive.

Good Luck!!

@Gator88NE Thanks! I get my ACT score tomorrow and I’m super nervous! Praying for that 33 to make me more competitive! I’ll update you tomorrow
