Scholarships based on ECs vs SATs?

What schools provide merit aid based more on grades and ECs than SATS. My standout accomplishments have been extracurricular related. My SATs are only good/average (1300), so I will not be getting any big bucks for that. What schools base scholarships on how they value the person and their accomplishments vs soley SAT scores?

Thanks! I can post my stats if you want...if that'll help.

I'd start with the Schools with Best Merit Aid thread and check the school details. SAT scores are often a component because they are easy to measure, are consistent for all applicants, and provide statistical boost in selectivity numbers. GPA often figures into these as well. It's common to see schools that have weighting for both GPA and SAT in determining merit awards.

I'd recommend targeting schools where your SAT would be in at least the upper quartile so that your SAT/GPA combination might get you in award range. I'd also see if you can find some schools that offer more holistic merit awards that recognize academics, community service, etc.

A 1300 is fine for merit aid at a ton of colleges. The average SAT score (old) is only about 1000, and colleges out of the top tier consider 1300 great. Just look for schools where you're in the top 10%

I mean like where is someplace going to consider my ECs too? Here's my stats (just got SAT scores today -- very pleased!!)

what is a regents exam?

its the new york state exam in that subject.

Even without the SAT (which looks fine, BTW) you would qualify for merit-based aid at many schools, I assume.

I'm 15/male from Buffalo, so I guess you too could win a nice scholarship to a good university when you least expect it.

I know you live in the suburbs because our schools have basically 2 APs.

what specifically are some schools that would be giving out this type of merit aid to students with my stats?

what school do you go to btw hookstra? PM me if u want. my school has more than 2 APs though. I just havent taken them yet since i'm just a junior

cmon guyssssss lol

I know SUNYs would.

^ meh, looking to get outta state

Try here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=52133

^ good thread, except good merit aid does not = good merit aid for lower SATs. I have a 1370. i might not qualify for a full ride at some of those schools because there are cutoffs or some are such good schools a 1370 is good enough to get in, but not to get $$. know what i mean? I want a school that'll value my potential contribution and Ecs

Keep in mind that most merit aid is based on just that, academic merit.

You will more likely find school where you will be in line for full tuition vs finding full tuition, room , board and books. (even if you find your "full ride" keep in mind that everything above the cost of tuition is considered taxable income for you). So theoretically, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

You will find very few schools if any that are willing to pay for your "potential contribution and ECs"

Try third tier colleges, which have average SAT scores that are so low that a 1370 on the old SAT would look good to them.

what are some good third tiers?

There aren't any...that's why they are third tier.

If I were you with all of that extra-curricular experience, then I would get to writing about them for essay contests and applying for outside scholarships. You are kind of stuck in a bad situation because low level schools don't really care so much about ec's as much as high SATs. It's mostly the higher level schools that care about ECs (along with high scores).

from my stats, what's the highest level schools i could be looking at? i think i posted my stats somewhere in this post...
