I have been looking at scholarships since the beginning of the year, applied to some small ones and the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship.
Totally regret that decision.
They stated that “most finalists are qualified for a Pell grant” and I applied because I wasn’t sure how low income I have to be to qualify for Pell, but filling the FAFSA a month later told me we make too much to qualify.
Anyone know any scholarships that don’t look at income as much? Maybe some merit (SAT:2270 ACT:35) or STEM (female pursuing computer science major) ones?
The very best scholarships are awarded directly by the colleges. With your stats, I believe you would get excellent merit aid from University of Alabama, Temple…if your GPA is sufficiently high. What is your GPA?
ETA I see your GPA is a 4.0. I believe you would get full tuition at University of Alabama, and at Temple, and these are guaranteed awards. But applications are due…now.
As you know, many schools on your application list don’t give merit awards, only need based aid. Will you qualify for need based aid.
Colleges that give merit aid. There are separate lists for LACs and universities.
@thumper1 thanks, my brother got a full ride to university of Alabama, they’re great on merit scholarships, but i don’t love the school. Deadlines at coming up in a few weeks, I know!
What is your home state? Intended major?
You will be better off spending your time on applications to schools with generous merit aid rather than chasing low odds outside schaolrships.
@txstella good ol’ TX, comp sci major. I was thinking that there might be some women in STEM scholarships or other specific ones like so, to apply to ontop of any merit scholarships.
What’s your middle class EFC?
When does your brother graduate?
@Madison85 Efc=28k. Idk if that’s high or low? my brother just graduated this year so I can’t put him down as another college student:/ if only he was a year younger right
It sounds high to me but it’s all relative. Maybe you live in a high cost area.
Did you ask your parents how much they can afford to pay each year for 4 years?
A $28,000 a year EFC per FAFSA would probably be a salary of about $100,000…either that or there are also significant assets.
The bigger question…what will your parents pay?
Did your brother get a full RIDE or full TUITION to Alabama?
@thumper1 @Madison85 brother had full ride, he was a national merit finalist. My parents are willing to pay ~10-15k a year, but most colleges I’m looking at are ~40k a year. Do merit scholarships get that high?

Have you looked here?
Most merit scholarships do not get higher than $20,000…and even that is high.
However many schools do have one or two more generous awards. They are usually highly competitive, however. For example, the Trustee Scholarship at Boston University pays all tuition and fees. That is about $40,000 a year. The student pays room/board and personal expenses.
Check the link provided in the above post. You might find something there for your stats.
What are your stats in addition to your GPA?
