Does anyone know of any colleges that provide scholarships for National Merit Semifinalists? My daughter received a nomination letter and has to choose 2 colleges to send her information to. However, the colleges we spoke with don't give any money for this award.

I'd like to use the two choices for colleges that may provide some assistance.

Her notice at this point was not making Semifinalist but Commended. Semifinalists will be sent notices in the fall. I would look under the sticky notes at the top of this forum for the schools that give the most merit aid. Many of those would be interested in seeing your D's scores.

It’s critical you use choices that give scholarships - because a lot that give scholarships will ONLY give them the big prize IF they name the school as their NUMBER ONE choice.

Right now, the 2 schools you’ll list doesn’t mean ANYTHING. You can just list any 2 schools at this point; it won’t mean a thing. Seriously. I’ve been through this twice.

The issue of picking a “number one” choice doesn’t matter until spring of SENIOR year! Not NOW.

What was your D’s PSAT score and what state are you from?

If you want to name a couple of schools that give big merit for national merit, then put down Alabama and Oklahoma. Those schools give 2 of the biggest scholarships.

BTW…I remember you from another thread. Tell your D to finish this semester with the best GPA possible. Some kids don’t make it if their GPA isn’t good enough.

There is a whole thread on National Merit. This gives you list of schools that offer scholarships and some for Semi-finalists. As mom2collegekids says, at this stage just sned in two colleges you are intersted in going to. If you don’t it is not a big deal, my S did not (he forgot to give me that paper -)). It has no affect.

WHY do people drag out these old threads? I’ve seen a number of out-of-date (by years!) threads brought back to life in recent weeks. I just don’t get it.
