He isn’t just an international. He is an undocumented international. And he will be a transfer student to boot. This all makes scholarships very difficult.
Is there any organization that deals with folks from his country in your area? Perhaps they can help find resources.
Also, I’m not familiar with the necessary visa needed to study here. Does he have a student visa? If not, he will have difficulty enrolling in any four year college without one, I would think.
He has lived here for a long time, and yes, I’ve learned that getting permanent resident status can take a long time. But has he even applied?
Where are his parents? Do they work?
I’m thinking he needs to get his immigration status straightened out.
He was in CA for 10 years so graduating from US HS would have got him AB 540. But he took GED. Now the financials are not eligible. This site has info for people who did not do qualify too, although they say it is tougher financially.

Thank you for stop saying citizen and confusing the issues.
For his two jobs working as an illegal alien is he paying federal and California income taxes by filing Form 1040 and CA 540?
Does he have a girlfriend or fiance who is a citizen?
Madison, why would that matter if he’s paying taxes or not? That is not the question for whether he’s eligible for instate tuition or FA. He’s not.
Are you suggesting he marry the girlfriend? Even that would not get him citizenship or FA.
@thumper1 he came to the country after finishing HS back in his native country. He did see an immigration lawyer and applied for a pathway to citizenship through the legislation that was passed a year or so ago. He paid the fees and has a 2-3 year period before its up for review and then he has re-apply for it again and then go through a final review process before becoming a citizen. Looking at 8-10 years time frame. Parents are not in the US. He’s flying solo.
@BrownParent He was already 20 when he came here. He had to retake some classes at the local Community College and obtained a GED.
@Madison85 He works as a 1099 and yes he pays a good amount in State and Federal taxes. He does have a girlfriend, but marriage isn’t something he wants to jump into. Not sure how long it would be before the benefits and any AID would kick in either.
ok so you are looking for aid for an independent student, 30 yo, transfer? Is this like peeling an onion where you will tell a layer at a time?
@BrownParent I guess so unintentionally… I’m not sure what information you guys need until the questions are asked.
So he came into the country illegally in his 20’s and now he wants someone to give him a scholarship? He really needs to go back to his home country and come back legally. I have friends that waited years to get legal immigration, why should your friend jump the line and get aid before those that came here legally?
He came to the country legally. I’m also not interested in making this into an immigration debate. I’m just asking for helpful information and insight. Thanks
It’s relevant to his eligibility for FA when he entered the US. If he entered after he finished HS in another country, he’s not eligible for DACA.
It’s irrelevant whether he entered the country legally on a first class airline ticket or illegally by stowing aboard a shipping container. It only matters whether he is presently in the country legally.
Why is he not a citizen? And why should American schools be expected to pay for someone who isn’t a citizen but doesn’t want to apply as an international applicant? Something’s missing here. If he came legally, why isn’t he a citizen? Is he a green card holder?
For me…could someone please clarify what kid of visa this student will need to even attend a four year college? Will he be able to get the student visa he needs?
