Scholarships from where?

Hi! I'm a high school senior looking for a university where I have a good chance at getting full tuition scholarships, half tuition scholarships, a lot of financial aid, etc. It would be cool to get into an extremely prestigious school but I don't want to have to pay an extremely prestigious price.

My preferences for colleges:

Majors: Must have engineering
Location: Medium sized city not too far from nature areas (i.e. Madison, WI)
Size: Medium to large, not small and engineering-specific

About me

White male in IL
4.0 unweighted GPA (5.05 weighted GPA)
5s and 4s on a few AP tests
34 ACT
2100 SAT
Rank: 12/550
Rigorous class schedule
On the border for National Merit Finalist...will know in September!

Chess team (captain)

Jazz band

Madrigal singers

Spring musical

Summer youth camp counselor over the summer

Music, history, and math honors societies

Lead singer in a ska-punk band that played gigs for money (no idea if I should include this...)

So again, I'm wondering what type/level of schools with decent engineering programs will most likely give me a lot of scholarship money. I'm looking at a few Big 10 universities around the midwest mainly... will probably apply to a few ivies and Cali schools just to see what happens also. Thanks!

How much money can your family pay? The CA public universities offer almost no aid for OOS students.

Go to the Financial Aid Forum, and read through the threads at the top that discuss Automatic Merit Aid, and Competitive Merit. You qualify for a lot of those scholarships.

Yes you should include your band…

Definitely include your band.
If you want to apply to California schools, concentrate on private schools (Pomona, USC, Pitzer, Occidental, Chapman, Redlands, Whittier…) since the UCs don’t give OOS merit aid.
If you’re into music and don’t mind the Midwest, look into Oberlin, St Olaf, Lawrence, Luther - although the ska punk scene might be a bit thin there. At least Oberlin and St Olaf are in towns where student bands frequently play. However none of these are “Big 10” type schools, quite the opposite (one may say that music is bigger than football there :p)

^^^^

A number of those schools don’t have engineering.

How much merit do you need? In other words, how much will your parents pay? If they’ll only pay $15k per year or so, you’d need a full tuition scholarship so that your parents money can pay for room, board, books, fees, and books.
