scholarships/large national stores/online apps....

What is your opinion/experience with these scholarship programs, you know, the various chain stores ( w; l; chicken wings etc) with long, time wasting online applications, short essays, that ask the student to tally and count hours of vol. work, numbers of EC's, how on earth can they make a choice, is it done by computer, e.g., 25 EC's are better than two? One kid of mine did many of these just because, well, you have to try every route, and got none, but got loads of other funding from national and local organizations. Is it a waste of time, and should my kid # 2 include these during his scholarship hunt this year?

Parent
Went through MANY PRINTER CARTRIDGES this past year.
Have chock full file folders to store- somewhere.
Now refer to self as Asssistant Resource Developer LOL and Why do we do it????

My D applied for just 2 of the national ones, and she was a finalist for both & received 1. She had to figure out all her volunteer info for her apps, anyway (and for the college's scholarship forms) ... all she had to do was reformat it for the national scholarships. For the most part, the short essays are pretty easy to write ... they aren't too "deep."

Now, when S's time comes, I won't even bother trying to get him to fill out any of those forms. He doesn't do much in the way of EC's, so it's pretty much a given he doesn't stand a chance. That would be a waste, in my opinion. Nothing against my kid ... he does challenge himself academically ... he just prefers to play guitar & mess with the computer, rather than do the traditional EC's.

I had no luck with the Walmart, Best Buy, and Lowes. They were a waste of time for me but I guess someone has to win them. I ended but with over 30K in outside scholarships though so I'm not complaining. Personally, I had more luck with local scholarships and those that my counselor recommended.

I guess some of the scholarship seeking process will remain a mystery, esp. for those large corporate ones that do not divulge how they distinguish one app from another, and everyone's experience will differ. I am happy for those of you who got scholarships from other sources, as we did.

Out of the large corporate scholarships, I applied for Walmart, BestBuy, LOWES, KFC, BurgerKing, CocaCola but only ended up getting Walmart. Then there's also Dell if you're low income.

I think that out of the National scholarships, these are the ones you have the best chance of getting. Most people have better luck with local scholarships.

I also applied for Walmart, BestBuy, Lowes, and Coca Cola and ended up getting only Wal-Mart.
