On Wash U's website, under the scholarships FAQ, it says:

Q: Can I use the same teacher recommendation for the scholarship as for admissions?
A: Yes. Your teacher may make copies of the recommendation and send one in for the admission application. You should ask your teacher to additionally complete the scholarship recommendation form. Then have your teacher give you a sealed envelope with a scholarship recommendation form and a copy of the admission recommendation to include with each scholarship application. Recommenders may also mail recommendation forms and letters directly to the scholarship committee.

Does this imply that the letters of recommendations that you send with your normal Wash U application don't get forwarded to the scholarship committees? That seems odd considering your transcript and everything else gets forwarded to the scholarship committees.

Thanks in advance

for future reference to anyone else who is applying for these scholarships:

I emailed my admissions officer and she said

It depends on the scholarship committee as to what they get sent. Some require the transcript and recs. and others don’t. As far as recommendation letters go, feel free to use the same teachers for both the admissions application and scholarship application. Basically teachers can use the same rec. for both! The same goes for any essays. You are welcome to use the same essay, as long as it pertains to that specific scholarship!

Yes, I called yesterday and that’s exactly what she said - they don’t get the letters forwarded to them. She also said my son could use a copy of exactly the same letter, but then she said it should be specific to the scholarship. My son’s applying for several scholarships - we hate to pester the teachers so much!

Even though you have heard that, I really can’t imagine that the scholarship committees do not get the teacher recs forwarded to them (after all, all scholarships are directly associated with the University so there shouldn’t be privacy issues, and it seems in their best interest to examine your entire application file).

I would be wary about using the same teacher recs for the scholarships. Really, an extra recommendation (with the assumption that this teacher/mentor has something of real substance to say about you) should only strengthen your application. If nothing else, ask the teacher to tailor their recommendation to the specifics of the scholarship.

For the scholarship that I received, I was nominated by two separate individuals, and I know that the committee examined both of these nomination letters along with my application.
