Is it even worth looking at ASU if you’re not going to be a NM Finalist and you’re OOS? My son is looking at Industrial Design and has a 2230 SAT with a 3.95/4.48 GPA, but will only be commended.

He’'ll get a President’s Scholarship of $13,000/yr automatically for those stats.

That’s not nearly enough. Our EFC is $9500 and the costs would far surpass that-definitely not worth going to ASU and paying more than he would for another major at the local state uni. Guess we’ll keep looking elsewhere.

There might be departmental merit that would stack on top, but you’d have to check with the dept on that. Guessing it still would not be enough, especially if you want Barrett, which is more expensive for rm/bd the first 2 years.

I don’t think he cares about an honors college. He’s just thinking ID right now. I guess we can check with the department.

Oh, I see, ID is in Herberger. At least for music, they definitely award decent merit that even stacks on top of the large NMF scholarship. They explained that their department merit award process is independent of the general university awards.

The Michigan State Honors College would give likely give him $15,000 and in-state tuition, but they don’t offer industrial design. He would need NMF or 1500 SAT or 33 ACT.

Again, he doesn’t have the cutoff; he’s got a 1480 right now. He will take the ACT, though, but yeah, at this moment, I’m investigating $$ for ID schools. There’s one that’s about 2 hours away, but it would still be about 11K unless he gets scholarships.

@celesteroberts “He’'ll get a President’s Scholarship of $13,000/yr automatically for those stats.”

I was aware of this but had heard that additional scholarships were likely for high stat kids. $13,000/yr off of $24,500 may not be enough to encourage my son to apply considering the other schools he is looking at. Is a 33 ACT and a 3.99 gpa likely to get more than the $13,000 scholarship? Not wanting to sound greedy but just be informed.

WAPacker, I am not certain, but I believe that the President’s is pretty much what you can expect from the university itself. You should call FA/Scholarship office and ask if there is other money. Since my D was NMF, she already was getting much more than that so I don’t have personal experience to share.

The thing is, you apply into a major and every dept. does it’s own thing. Some may have more money to throw around than others. All I know is that my D received the NMF full tuition/fees scholarship and I assumed that was so generous already that that would be all she got. But music gave their own scholarship that covers a good portion of the rm/bd. If you change majors, you will lose that sort of scholarship.

You should also contact the dept your DC is applying into and ask what kind of money they have to give high ability freshmen and what percentage get anything and amt of average award.

^Thanks.

Sbjdorlo, I think I remember from previous posts that your son is URM- Hispanic. Is he NHS? This I think means tuition scholarship. My son is also ID major. Accepted at DAPP at Univ of Cinn, ASU in ID both with scholarship money. Attending CMU in CFA. CMU shows you the money if you apply ED. Look into University of Houston ID program with their Top Tier Scholars program.

Ah, no, that is my oldest son. This son is not Hispanic.

Seriously CMU shows you the money ED? I’ve run net price calculators on them over the years and it always seems waaay out of reach, well beyond what our EFC says, so it’s never gotten on the list for either my oldest or my current HSer.

How can one be sure, though? CMU seems like they have an amazing design program.
