For all the seniors here, which scholarships did you apply to? Which did you manage to get?

wow, thats a really broad question, considering scholarships differ depending on your region. but i got a scholarship from my school for national merit finalists, a scholarship from my schools engineering department for my act/gpa, and a scholarship my state offers for act/gpa/attendance. i applied to a bunch of local scholarships but i havent found out about any of them yet.

Applied to some local ones you wouldn’t know, qualified for National Merit, and got a merit scholarship from every school that accepted me except for one.

National Merit–and that’s actually the only scholarship I got that wasn’t specific to a college. A little bit depressing, I guess, especially considering I applied to several that I thought I’d be a shoo-in for. I guess not. :P

Unless you’re exceptional enough for Coca Cola and the Gates scholarships, I’d recommend mainly going for school-specific ones. Often times, the local scholarships appear to be rooted in connections (e.g. all the ones in my area are church-affiliated, and they tend to favor people of the same faith), although I guess they’re still worth a shot, depending on what your family connections are like. Plus, at HYPS, all third-party scholarships are subtracted from your financial aid reward. (I think. I could be wrong about HPS, but that’s at least the case for Yale.)
