Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2018-2019

I ended up getting 3x Gold Key, 4x Silver Key, 2x Honorable Mention, with two pieces not receiving anything. Super super grateful, but I do agree that it seems like a crapshoot. My two best pieces (or at least I thought they were the best) ended up getting Silver.

@marxism West Region-at-Large was supposed to come out 5PM EST but they were available now.

Also, I would love to see what others wrote, and be willing to share my own pieces, if anyone’s interested!

@phanakin pm me your pieces and I’ll send you mine

What percent roughly of gold keys become gold medals??

I have a question for anyone who can answer what happens now when are we notified of any further progress

Results for art: 5 silver 3 gold 3hm 1 American visions

Note to all future applicants
They REALLY favored my realistic ones and I don’t have many realistic ones I had read that somewhere before hoped it wasn’t true because I tend to like the mixed media abstract metaphorical deep meaning

I do agree with @phanakin about it being a crapshoot because one of my pieces that I thought was the best and so did my art teacher didn’t receive anything and the other received a silver the ones that were gold were my really realistic ones that i kinda thought were a little bland

Out of 11 submissions, I got 4 gold keys, 2 silver keys, and 4 honorable mentions, so I’m really happy (although I agree it’s a crapshoot; some of my best ones won honorable mentions and one of my favorite pieces won nothing). Good luck to everyone!

You do nothing but wait. In early March the national medals will be announced. Hopefully, you’re on the list. Congrats and good luck!

How do special award nominations work for regions at large, out of curiousity?

And btw, for anyone who’s disappointed with their results–I submitted 3 pieces last year and only won a silver and an honorable mention. So many successful writers faced a lot of rejection before becoming successful. Keep on writing, and don’t let rejection/disappointing results hinder you; use it as motivation, and prove them wrong!

@wistfulwords they don’t have american visions/voices nominees for region-at-larges (it’s unfair, I know)

All the writers on cc r reallyyy pullin out those big awards good job y’all :)))

It appears the results are in but the website can’t handle the traffic. My gosh, brutal.

Wow the Hudson-to-Housatonic region was BRUTAL this year. My son didn’t get anything for his Senior Writing Portfolio at all (only 12 portfolios got any recognition of any kind, and most were silver key and HMs), but out of everything he submitted, he got just one award – a gold key for a sci-fi story he had reworked from years before. It was literally the last piece I thought would get anything, and the strongest piece in my opinion that he submitted got nothing at all. They had 2100+ entries in our region and only 5% got a gold key and only 30% got anything at all. Our school district is also usually a powerhouse in the awards, but this is the shortest award list we’ve ever had that I can remember.
DS also got his first ever art award for the Region at Large – an Honorable mention – so he was psyched about that!

Congrats to everyone who got an award! It seems like this was by far the most competitive year ever!

So I submitted 5, and got 2 gold’s and an honorable mention, which is amazing, considering I only got a silver and an honorable mention last year. So right now, I’m feeling absolutely estatic. I agree with everybody else about the crapshoot point though, one of my worst pieces got a gold, and my best piece got the honorable mention. Good job to everybody!

How did u view the stats for ur region? @Samsmom2019

Sorry for asking so many questions, but does anyone know if you can reenter pieces that didn’t win? I entered a piece as a critical essay instead of personal essay. I’m pretty much slapping myself because it was one of my best pieces but it didn’t win anything because I entered in the wrong catergory :((

1 HM, nothing else :stuck_out_tongue:

So it goes

Sad my portfolio only got Silver— was hoping for Gold. I did get two Gold Keys for poetry, and one for short story, which is a big improvement from last year when I got seven Silvers but just one Gold. I actually thought judging was pretty good this year; I’m not surprised by the pieces that won or didn’t win.

Do most gold keys get a national award? Or only a few?
