Is there a written or unwritten benchmark for scholastic qualification for first year college students wanting to enter USNA? Is it SAT/ACT? GPA from High School? GPA from first semester at college? Thanks.

I work in my college's Admissions Department and to me the scholastic qualification seems like a standard letter the dept sends to most people to encourage candidates to finish the process. I really dont think the scholastic qualification is as big of a deal as we make it out to be.

It's a very big deal if one seeks an appointment to USNA. Can't leave home without it.

There really isn't a "benchmark".

However, strive to get at least a 3.0 in college classes that are similar to the first semester of plebe year (Calculus, Chemistry, History, etc.)

Additionally, get involved in activities, whether intramural sports, running road races, doing community service. If you can prove to the admissions board that you can handle an academic load with additional activities, then it helps your cause.

SAT/ACT - really depends on how "well" you did during the first cycle. You can always retake the exams and try to increase your score, but I would recommend not taking the exam more than twice, as the college GPA weighs significantly.

Your GPA from high school will probably not factor in (it may a little). A college GPA is usually more telling.

Did the candidate take the classes we told them to take? (English, Chemistry with lab, Calculus, History) Did they get at least Bs? What did the teacher recs say? If your SATs are below 570 in either math or critical reading (or 24 on ACT), it's probably a good idea to retake the test but not required. If you applied as a senior and didn't get it, try to find out what could have been improved by talking to your BGO or RD. Perhaps more athletic involvement or leadership activities would help. 51 members of the class of 2011 were accepted from college/university/prep school (not NAPS or Foundation). The board will start reviewing college records for 2012 in the next few weeks. Be persistent! Be motivated to serve!

I'm from college but my situation was a little different so I don't know if i'm even in that 51. But I went to college for senior yea,r graduated early and took chem, calc, etc. I'm sure it helped, but we'll never know.

If "51 members of the class of 2011 were accepted from college/university/prep school (not NAPS or Foundation)" is there any indication of how many applications to USNA came from this pool of college students?
