Which one would you go to! Which one seems better KNOWN even?

IF you were a girl who didn't care about being in a co-ed school and such. For once just FORGET about the co-ed school lingo and think about the rankings between the single-sexers. :)

Seriously, which one would you prefer overall and WHY(very important!)?

My little sister, Riana, got accepted to both and she is torn in between. :/

I think Emma W. is way better but that's because I'm biased alumni. :)

Well your first response is from a porter's girl. I obviously go to porter's thus prefer it. I would say if your sister wants a rural, tight knit community that is lots of fun, and is kind of crazy to come to porter's. As far as sports go, MPS is competitive in many sports (crew, bball, softball, lax, xc ski, and swim). The other sports also are breaking barriers and pushing porter's to the top.
As far as academics, you really develop a new way thinking and writing at prep schools, and especially all-girls ones. It seems to me that both schools offer the advanced english electives, so I can't say that's a bonus. Porter's really does rule in science and math I think though.

But I suggest you re-visit both. I think emma willard has gorgeous architecture and is an awesome school. I think porter's is better, but I think your sister needs to think about what feelsright b/c at this point.... she probably knows what she wants and if there is a way for that school to give it to her. Personally when I visited MPS, I said no way, but after visiting abotu 6 more times, I pulled myself out of my shell and said to my mom "I think porter's stole the world's population fo nice people"
But in the end, tell her to go with what she feels. good luck!

I applied to Emma Willard and got accepted so I know a bit about it. I'm going this fall.

I have to say... DEFINITELY Emma Willard! I know a bit about Porter's since I applied there too.

Anyway, Emma Willard has a gothic-looking campus with tunnels to get to classes, gargoyles under the French windows and everything! Also, they have a wonderful new Hunter Science center. I don't know about their sports but I think it's alright. They seem to win most of their competitions. They have a huge arts program (a touring dance company, pottery, sculpting and such) and you can do loads of internships (like be a genetics research assitant at the Rensallaer Polytechnic Institute). The town life in Troy is good.

I really dont know much about Emma Willard, but my family has a history there and I am about to enter my freshman year there, so obviously this is a bit biased. however, it depends on what ur sister si interested in. Music? their programs alright? Visual Arts? incredible. Sports? Excellent. Science? Very good. math? Above Average Language? Very good. etc. etc... MPS also has tons of oppurtunities for outside the classroom and outside campus. what is ur sister interested in? This will help her decide. Good luck to her!

Definitely Miss Porter's. Seriously, the idiot of a web designer at Emma Willard completely blocked Opera users from viewing the site. I'm too lazy to change to a new browser at the moment.

Jerks. It's not like it'll be majorly screwed up in Opera, anyways.

(bows out now, as I have contributed absolutely nothing to this discussion)

Well, seems MPS is more famous but what people haven't told me is how it is BETTER! Like between the science centers, which one is better equipped? Which dorms are roomier? What food is better? It would be great if someone who has visited both schools posted! Gosh! :)

My mum keeps bugging me about this:

"Go find info Alicia, Alicia this is your sisters life! ALICIA you have experience! Blah blah..."

AND my little sister is not interested in anything! No special interest - just plays with friends and gets average grades. shrugs She IS getting a little more serious and it's important that she goes to the best school if she can.
(Hmm, I sound like my mum. Scary innit?)

Can you give me specific info for example:

"MPS has..... which EWS DOESN'T"(something like that)

Okay this is what I have found out so far from you guys:

-MPS has a better website
-MPS has nicer people? I dunno!
-EWS has higher SAT scores
-EWS is prettier

Oh yeah, and we can't visit the schools personally because we live in England - we just both love the idea of going to school in America! I moved back from EWS two years ago without ever seeing Miss Porter's so I just don't know much about it mates.

My daughter is going to MPS in September. We worked with a consultant about 18 months ago when she first came up with the idea of going to boarding school. We ended up with a list of 12 or so schools to look at. 3 schools were single sex : Westover, Porter's, Madiera. So, we did not look at Emma Willard at all.
Porter's does have a great science and arts building. I thought the labs were well equipped. The art studios, particularly the clay studio and the photography facilities, were awesome. The library is relatively new with many different cozy reading areas. I liked that it has several group study rooms to enable the students to work together on different projects/assignments. We only saw that at one other school.
The dorms are all old houses and I thought they were roomy - but we only saw one or two rooms!
I have never been to Troy, New York but Farmington was a very lovely town. Would being closer to a large airport be important for your sister to get back and forth across the pond?
Good luck to your sister!

One more thing about Porter's ........ the Director of Admissions told us, after we had repeated a story to her about a girl leaving after the first few weeks because of homesickness, that the boarding school average for new students leaving is 10%. At a girl's school that drops down to 8%. At Miss Porter's the number is 4%. To me that means that they really work hard to make sure that everyone fits in and is happy. I also think it means that the support system is very strong.

Well, if ur sister has no interests, i know that MPS is a great place to find "yourself" and new interests. Also, about nicer people: Many kids are going to be cruel, snobby, and just plain mean- at ANY school you go to. Also, since she will be boarding, ask her to review pamphlets and websites and everything about each school and see which one seems like a better HOME for her and which FEELS right for her to eat, sleep, and socialize at. In the long run, that might be better than comparing science departments and everything. If your sister is comfortable in her home/dorm life, she'll be more comfortable in the classroom. Also, EW seems to look more like a college campus. Some people aren't quite ready to experience that, not till college. Some people are. Ask your sister to think about these things, and choose someplace thats going to be her home AND school for the next 4 years.

SeasonsofLuv23 - thanks that was great adivce. Miss Porter's does seem to have a tighter community even though it has more students - probably because the campus is smaller. lol. I don't know just theorizing. And we can't visit just now - too far away. Anyway, we only have a few days to come up with the answer with the extended deadlines. We already passed the April 10th one. You're going to be a freshman right? If she goes to Porter's, you two might probably meet! (She'll be the one with the effin' strong english accent! :) )

That's great shelley14 - thanks for that info about the airport!

Also, my sister seems to be falling for EWS just because of the campus looks but I'll filll her in on all this. Thanks you guys! I still want to hear more though!

I vote for Emma, but I have never been to Miss. Porter's. And about somebody's post about nice girls, the emma community is a very friendly community and unlike most schools theres very little bit****chyness etc. and ok thats all of my comments.
