School asked me to retake GRE...are they even interested?

Hi everyone,

I'm a little curious as to what this means. I just got an email from a department which is my first choice, I've contacted, visited, the whole nine yards. The email stated that they were impressed with my application but my GRE scores were low and to either retake and submit with my current application or you can submit them again with an application this year.

So I'm in a MA program now and when I was applying for MA programs I considered applying to this school but later decided not to. I really don't remember doing this but I sent my GRE scores to this same school I'm speaking of when I took it two years ago...and yes the scores were low.

I ended up retaking the GRE this month and did well, but did not have my official scores back in time to submit them for application review, but the school informed me that they had scores for me for two years ago. I had to go ahead and use those scores or else my application wouldn't have been reviewed. So I guess it was good and bad. The bad thing is that they did not receive my new updated scores and had to see the old, bad ones. So I emailed the department yesterday to let them know of my recent scores and that the people who put together app. packets would not allow me to submit my unofficial scores.

I'm curious as to what this means, and have been debating if they actually have looked over my application and were impressed/interested in me as a potential student. Or if this is a really nice semi-rejection letter that they do for everyone if they don't meet the scores they want?

BTW, I hate this waiting period!

Hmm, I'd say that if they asked you to "submit" something that they are interested but you need to pick-it-up in a certain area. Kinda hard to get a good fix on this, though, since things can vary so widely between schools and departments.
Is there a specific professor that you know or want to work with? If so, you could try to contact them and let them know the situation regarding scores.

I have contact with two professors there. I considered contacting them and giving them the unofficial scores but then I became hesitant since I didn't want to go over peoples heads. There rule is that they don't accept unofficial scores so I felt odd about trying to sneak around to different people and try to give them unofficial scores.

Call ETS and find out how long it will be before you can send scores to the program. When I took my GRE last year, it only took them 2 1/2-3 weeks to get my official scores to my program (I know they say longer, but...). Then you can call the program, explain the situation, and tell them "ETS said you should get scores by ..."

Did you put the program's name in to have scores sent when you took the GRE?

Yes I put the programs name in when I took the test. Online they said the scores should be ready within 10-15 business days. It hasn't been quite that long yet.

OK, so let your program know that you took the test on X date and will have your scores to them as soon as possible. Tell them you can send the unofficial scores if they like, which they can then confirm. Most programs will do that, if the dates are close. If they refuse the unofficial and opt to wait for the official, let them know what approximate date they should be expecting them. Tell them you will follow up to make sure they get them ASAP.

To be honest, you probably should have taken the test sooner so as not to be in this position. But no use crying over spilt milk.

I took them so late because I had the understanding that I could just submit my unofficial scores, but now it's become a dilemma since I was confused as to the type of unofficial scores they were speaking of.
I emailed the person back to let her know the unofficial scores, she's actually on the committee, where as the people who said I couldn't submit my self-reported scores were just the people who work in the general admissions part. So assuming they are going to look at these scores and wait on the official. I did tell them that the official scores should be coming within the next week or two.
I'm just hoping the interest in the GRE scores is a positive thing. This is my #1 choice so hopefully I'll get a response soon.
