D is interested in either med or vet School, but at the same time pursuing a business major.
Her HS counselor told her that places where this is possible (and she thought could be admitted) within a same
location are UC Berkeley, University of Virginia, Vanderbilt etc.
The idea is that a same location offers to get within 4 years: a biz major and all the prerequisites (subjects/practice) for med or vet School. She will decide during college freshman year whether to go the med or vet route .
I would like to know which schools you recommend that offer all. She has good stats and up to this moment cost
Is not a concern. She just doesn’t want big party schools and no interest in Ivy League .
If anyone can offer suggestions, that would help a lot to start narrowing down the list based on offerings per college.
Not in the areas you are looking but we looked at two schools that have everything you are looking for. Auburn and Kansas State. Both have excellent pre-vet programs, pre-med programs and very good business schools. They both will be good for the ability to get excellent grades (major factor for vet or med schools) and have good advisors. They also both have vet schools which can help to see if she really wants that. My son chose Kansas State because of the excellent scholarship and good program. It is 23,000 but he says it feels much smaller. He is pre-vet and his girlfriend is pre-med. They are finishing up their year both with 4.0s and feeling they have had a great first year education. They have good friends in the business school that also like it. It isn’t known as a huge party school. There is partying but no one cares if you do or don’t get involved in it. The pre-meds and pre-vets are very grade conscious. Just somewhere you ought to look at and not just blow off (oh and S in from a big city OOS and loves it there).
Most likely almost anywhere that you can get a business degree, you will also be able to complete the academic prerequisites for both med and vet school. It will just require thoughtful scheduling. If she has interest in vet, a couple of things that you need to know if you don’t already. 1) Animal contact hours. If you are a urban/suburban family, you will be up against people that have spent their whole life at the business end of a cow. It his helpful to be able to demonstrate that you will not be scared. 2) If she is interested in small animals, she will be part of a way over represented group. 3) Vet schools are very biased to instate students. She likely has only one real option for vet school. 4) You day that cost isn’t an issue, but if you are full pay, it could cost you $600k+ for some options. If you haven’t yet go to the pre vet forum on this site.
@just, UCD for its vet school, ranked number one in the country. But I agree with @Eeyore123, most colleges are going to have business degrees and most will also have the course pre-reqs needed for vet school, so other considerations are very important.
Cal Poly SLO also has good animal science and business major options. But public California universities are very expensive for OOS.
Actually, my daughter was thinking about UC Davis and the GC suggested San Diego or Berkeley campuses instead. She is still interested in UC Davis though.
I agree being OOS UCs are quite pricey and K- State is not (quite as pricey). She is interested in the small animal specialty if she decides to go that route, and we are suburban (no cattle nearby).
That $600k for vet school got me by surprise. Is that for the 4 year undergraduate + 4 year graduate?
@Just K-State is not overly religious at all. It is very inclusive in that way. My son goes to church mainly because his gf does but most of his friends don’t and it is no big deal!
i agree, none of the schools you are targeting a slam dunks, regardless of her stats. While it is great to dream, she needs to identify a couple of schools as assured landing spots. Her application pool should include at least 2-3 dreams, two maybes and 2 to 3 known YES that are known to be financially feasable.
As a couple of others point out above, most colleges of any size have something akin to a biz major (sometimes it is in the Econ dept) and, it shouldn’t be too difficult to cover most Vet school pre-reqs at most colleges too. Most colleges have a ‘build your own’ major option too. Not sure of the qualifications of the counselor but, I’d suggest you do your own research or get a second opinion.
