School Newspaper?

Could someone help out?

I did a search, checked the a-z index, and still can't find the school newspaper link....

Thx

Well, there's more than one. So it depends what you're looking for.

There's the Statesman, the "official" paper and administration butt-monkey. Often full of error-ridden, sloppy reporting on things no one cares about.

Then there's The Press, the liberal-leaning open forum paper--they're not shy about criticizing and exposing the administration, but they don't edit or deny submissions based on content, period, so there's lots of parody and often some porn. Which means the front of the paper, written by their staff, often includes some well-done articles, while the back inevitably has a multi-page rant or two by Stony Brook's resident conspiracy theorist(s) (mostly just one guy). Definitely the most fun to work for/hang out with, but likely not where you want to be if you're looking for a journalism career.

The Independent was started by journalism students who wanted a more serious and credible alternative to the above. They don't take money from student government or advertising AFAIK, so their budget is tiny and they limit themselves to publishing online and On the Wall/On the Stall (heh) poster summaries they put up around campus on bulletin boards and in bathrooms. They also do some pretty good reporting.

In the truly laughable corner we have The Patriot, the newspaper arm of the College Republicans. Not published more than once or twice a semester, but when it is it's a gem of right-wing paranoia and offensiveness. I'll never understand how a right-wing group can claim to be silenced and marginalized at a school that gives its College Republicans over $20,000 a year, but they manage to find a way.

There are a couple of other small, seldom published papers associated with other clubs and ethnic groups, but the only ones that come to mind are Blackworld, whose prominence ranges from non-existent to minimal depending on how active their e-board is and whether they remembered to do budget applications on time, and the Asian-American e-zine published in The Press.

Good post!

Much appreciated!
