Hi. My son is interested in ( international ) business. He is a pretty good A- student, 2140 SAT, editor of paper, good ECs. Various colleagues have mentioned NEU as a good possible choice for him. I checked the website and recall reading about a co-op program. Would anyone know if this program is well respcted and briefly advise how it operates in conjuntion with regular classwork. Thanks very much. Best of luck to all. Marc

The Co-op program is EXTREMELY well respected as is the Int'l Business program. The co-op was ranked number one in the country by US News and World Report several years ago [the year they did so was the last year that category was included in the rankings]. Businessweek ranked NU 26th overall for undergraduate business schools, 15th for international business and 1st in the nation for internships.

As for the co-op program. The co-op starts either at the end of sophomore year or the first semester of middler [third] year, depending on when you take the mandatory Intro to Co-op class and depending on what co-op division you are placed in. Essentially, you work with Northeastern to get a job within your area of interest. For example, as a poli sci major, I'l be looking to co-op at law firms and possibly the Mass. State house. As a business major the possibilities are endless being in a major metropolitan area. So, potentially, your son's sophomore year could look like this:
Semester 1: Class
Semester 2: Class
Summer 1: Co-op
Sumer 2: Co-op

or

Semester 1: Class
Semester 2: Co-Op
Summer 1: Co-op
Summer 2 : Class

As I said though, when you're on co-op vs. in class depends on when you take Intro to Co-op and what Division you're put in my the school.

Here's the co-op website: http://www.neu.edu/coop/general/index.html

Hope that helped and good luck to you and your son.

Hi NJN..Thanks very much for the info and websites. Very helpful. There are so many nice programs re : Intl. Business in a number of quality schools, NEU, BU, GWashington, American Univer., etc.. I guess a threshhold question to be determined concernign NEU is whether a co-op program is the best fit for my son or the traditional 4 year college setting. Things and decisions certainly seemed easier when I went to college way back. Thanks again. Marc
