hi, i’m a rising senior and i want to apply to cornell’s school of hotel administration. i didn’t give much thought to this major but i recently wanted to study this major.
the problem is that i don’t have work experience in the hospitality area–i’ve only done internship at a pharmacy (i wanted to become a pharmacist) and work at a cellular retail (ex. verizon wireless, at&t, metropcs…).
summer’s almost over now and i’m nervous because i’ve never done any work in restaurant/hotel. i applied for a job at a restaurant but they rejected me because i was too young & a senior now );
do you think it’ll be okay for me with my current intern & work experience? i have a 3.91 uw gpa and 34 on the ACT. if they look at legacy, i have a sibling who currently attends cornell… please help and thank you! );
keep applying to internships and jobs for experience it’s important for hotel. try getting it for the fall too if possible
Despite your stellar scores, hotel does really focus on fit and experience. Cornell does not count siblings as legacy. Keep trying for jobs in restaurants or hotels. Other industries would still offer you hospitality experience, like catering or working at a country club or even a valet service. Think anything that would require you to be, well, hospitable. Look around your area and apply to anywhere that could give you hospitality experience.
hi there!
my daughter got accepted without experience! no hook, no legacy, nada.
she explained at the time, why she thought she was a good fit. She had also mentioned in her essays that she applied to a hotel job and is currently waiting to hear back.
She is linguist speaking multiple languages, she was able to explain why this helped her fit into the Hotel School (as hospitality is an international business)
if you don’t have experience…try to find another reason why you fit into the school (She used languages). Good luck!
