There are many master's of social work programs (MSW) throughout the country. They are typically two year programs which involve coursework and clinical practicums. Practicums involve service in community agencies such as community mental health centers, hospitals, planned parenthood etc. MSW's are found throughout healthcare and social service agencies. Clinical social workers can work independently in mental health (open their own office) after some years of supervised experience. Admission to many social work programs is not as tough as getting into the top colleges. USNWR ranks the top social work schools as Michigan, Washington U, Columbia, Berkeley, and Chicago.

i am starting at uchicago this year.....i was choosing between chicago and columbia and thought that i'd for sure go to columbia. when i visited columbia, i was extremely turned off -- they couldn't stop drilling the fact that "this IS columbia...you can't pass up a columbia experience" over and over again.......the class size is huge....450/class about and the students said taht the interaction between student and staff was below average. i really wanted to love columbia's program and i didn't -- at all. when i came to chicago, the atmosphere was completely different. most of the students i spoke to were very happy with the program and with their classmates. you get split up into cohorts and there are many different areas that you can concentrate in.....also chicago students are very well respected when they go to their field placements, as Chicago has had many years of relationships with the organizations that take on students for their field placements.
