Hi, Has anyone done or is anyone currently enrolled in this summer’s online version of The School of the New York Times Summer Program? Wondering what the experience was like? Also, if you were accepted into the program this summer, and then told it was going online, did you decide to do it or not? And if doing it, why? What were your reasons to continue? Same, if not.
Short answer: No.
Longer question: what is the appeal of this program even in non-covid era …? I am probably reading this incorrectly but it seems like a way for the NYT to monetize its rep while giving little of value in return. Like the non-online version might allow a child to be in NYC and see the UN. The online version at $2750 PER CLASS plus a $75 online fee (???) for a TWO WEEK COURSE. It seems a lot like taking almost $3000 and using it to start your summer BBQ. It’s not like attending this paid program will “get me into a better college” and I’m not sure it will teach anything much of value. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
I question the “teach anything much of value.” That’s the part that is drawing me. Others (although few) have posted that in person, it was a great program. The question is “How’s the online version?” In fact, students doing other online summer programs … I’d like to hear how it went or how it’s going?
DS is taking an online summer program. He is working with industry experts, similar to what the NY Times program promises. The instructors for his program were listed on their website. The NY Times summer program doesn’t list any names of the instructors. The cost for DS’ program works out to be about $25/hour. The NY Times course at $3000 for a 2 week online course, with 2 hours/day of instruction is $150/hour. You could hire your own journalism professor for that.
