idk if this is in the right section so please forgive me…
anyway, im in my third week of my freshman year of college and everything is exactly the opposite of what I was hoping. I am a BME major and I knew it would be tough. My parents know how stressed I feel and they told me to give it some time that it takes some getting used to but I cant handle this anymore. 80% if the days I get home and cry. I feel so useless because everyone else seems to know what is going on in class and I feel lost. Why cant I be as smart as them? I have never in my life taken physics and I am now in a 200 level class. If I stay in this major my GPA will be terrible and I wont be able to get into med school but if i switch it I will feel like a failure. Why can everyone else pull off this major but not me? My parents are getting really tired of all my winning. I honestly wish I didn’t exist. This isn’t even a question I’m so sorry I guess I just wanted to rant for a bit.
You’re just as smart as them – you got into the same college, after all! And it’s possible many of your classmates are struggling just as much as you are. However, if it seems like they’re having an easier time, perhaps they’re taking better advantage of their resources, which is something you can do too!
Have you tried…
- Going to office hours?
- Attending review sessions?
- Reading the textbook and doing practice problems?
- Studying with classmates?
- Getting tutoring?
- Using websites like Khan Academy?
Edited to add:
There is no shame in switching majors if there’s something else you like better. The goal of premed is to a) take the prereqs and b) keep your GPA high. If there is another major that will allow you to do both of those, why not switch to it?
If you continue feeling sad and helpless, check out your school’s counseling services. They are often free, and they’re there specifically for you!
See if your school has a recommended academic plan for BME, or talk to an advisor to find one. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with a difficult course load during your first semester, it may be possible to drop a class and put it off until later. (At my school, for instance, you’d be a semester ahead if you’re taking physics now; it would be possible here to take it in the spring instead.)
yes i have tried all those things every thursday i go from 1-3:20 to my math professors office hours and i do all the practice problems she assigns i feel very worthless and physics is so difficult for me i just hate myself for every thinking i was smart
Physics is a difficult class…dunno why you were expecting it to be easy. You’re finding it hard. So are a lot of other people, I guarantee it. But plenty of engineering students pass physics every year, and you can be one of them. You ARE smart. You got into college, you chose engineering. You obviously have the capability or they wouldn’t have let you in.
Just to clear some things up for myself:
Are you having trouble in all of your classes? (Follow-up: which classes are they? Maybe people here or on another forum can help?) If so, you’ll have to put the work in and utilize the strategies I listed above for EACH class.
So you are already being proactive in math. That is good. Are you still struggling in that class despite going to office hours and doing problems?
Are you doing the same proactive things for physics as you are for math? What about your other classes?
I got a 45 on my first college physics exam! I was dumb and signed up for honors physics, when I wasn’t really prepared for it. My HS GPA was 4.0 (over 98 out of 100). I thougtht my life was over. I kept plugging, and ended up graduating with high honors. So keep going! I got a tutor, and that helped a lot.
