This year’s competation is fearce. Some the the facts for 2010 Applications we received in the mail are:

Groton: 1000 (applications), for only 82 Seats (for 9, 10, 11 gr)
Taft: 1500 (applications), for only 160 Seats (for 9, 10, 11 gr)
Milton: 1000 (applications), for only 150 Seats (for 9, 10, 11 gr)
St Paul: 1300 (applications), for only 185 Seats (for 9, 10, 11 gr)
Hotchkiss:1600 (applications), for only 210 Seats (for 9, 10, 11 gr) students on FA dropped to 27% for 2010.

The fact of the matter is schools received more application during 2010 than any other year. Therefore the admit percent rate dropped at every school. FA has become a more scarce resource.

Appreciate it some of you can post similar facts you received in the mail too for other schools. Gives us a sense on what is going on for 2010 application.

SPS received 1300 completed applications, and accepted 185 students, consequently, the acceptance rate is about 14%. No one knows how many students will matriculate, but I assume SPS has a granular understanding of these numbers.

At SPS - they accepted only 185. Hence, the 14% acceptance rate the school is posting. Last year, their yield was around 70% so, assuming the same, that would be 130 seats.

Here’s the complete rundown on SPS acceptances this year:

last year, thacher had 410 applications and accepted around 80 students, so… i don’t think applications would plunge by over 50%
also, from their website:
“Although Thacher mailed fewer than 80 acceptance letters to prospective boarding students, the admitted group is diverse in talents, interests, and backgrounds.” that was for this year. i don’t think they’d send 3 acceptance letters per accepted student… :S

Jay, I don’t think they are tight lipped. I think they wait until they have all data before releasing the info. I picked up a little red half sheet of paper during my son’s interview that was on the table of literature available for parents in the admissions lobby that had VERY detailed info (number of apps per grade - number accepted per grade etc).

It’ll come out later. If they follow the same trend as the others, they’ll end up with a decrease of a few percentages. Last year they were 17% admitted, I’d guess 16% or 15% this year. I dunno.

This admit rate business is very irregulated. It’s self-reported and schools are seemingly using different calculation methods. Exeter apparently used number of preliminary applications as the denominator when reporting a 17% admit rate for last year. There was an Exonian article with detailed breakdown that would translate to a 19% admit rate. Other schools other than Andover simply do not distinguish preliminary and completed applications.

Suffice it to say that all the top schools are kind of a crap shoot. That’s always been enough for me. General, admitted divided by number of apps percentages aren’t really very useful. So much depends on what category an applicant falls in to determine admissions rate. For instance, a financially needy international student will have a MUCH more difficult time gaining admittance to a top schools than a full paying domestic, connected, URM - all other things being equal. That’s an extreme example, but I think everyone knows what I mean.
