schools for an okay student...

Hey all!!! :)
Like the title says... I'm not the brightest of the brightest but have decent gpa and sat scores and you know the rest...
what are some good schools for engineering (undergrad schools) that aren't super reach for people like me???

USMA-1st engineering school in the country

what does USMA stand for??

Bucknell, Lehigh, Purdue, WPI, RIT, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Northeastern, Georgia Tech, Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ)

are the schools stated above fairly recognized schools for engineering?

Yes. All of the schools I listed have very strong and well-known engineering programs.

Just a quick question... colleges like Harvey Mudd or UCSD, are their engineering programs good as well?

Washu, Vanderbilt, Emory, Notre Dame

what about the ones in the west?

*Harvey Mudd is very hard to get into; their average GPA is 3.8 & average SAT 1450, & 93% of their students are in the top 10% of their HS class

*UC-SD is extremely difficult to get into if your not a California resident

*All the schools calloftheblade listed are very hard to get into if you only have decent scores/grades.

It would help us find some good schools for you if you posted your...

*Weighted & Unweighted GPA
*SAT I & II scores
*ACT scores
*Class rank
*State you live in
*Activities

Well I live in California... I have about 4.22( soph +Junior) and not a top notch SAT score (plan to retake in two weeks :o)... any chances for me for those schools that are listed above???

What's your unweighted GPA all 3 years? If you don't know the exact #, give us an estimate. Also, what exactly is your SAT score & class rank?

Ummmm... I'm not really sure of my unweighted.. but i think it's around
UW: 3.9 (something around) Weighted: 4.22 ( i think.. obviously I'm not really sure of anything..I'll get my transcript tomorrow)
upper 4% in class ranking
live in California
EC:
NHS, CSF, Cross country, hospital volunteering, key club, future medical club(have been officer), link crew (officer), school yearbook, class council, piano (advanced merit) = can't really think of other stuff...
AP:
bio(5)
european civ(4)
us(4)
eng comp
env science(3)
gov
eng lit
calc
phys
*i'm taking some right now...

SAT: 1790 :( = i'm studying really hard right now
SAT II: 690 bio, 790(korean), math(taking in november)
* my SAT scores are pretty low... and that's what I'm afraid of.. :(
well any feedback is welcom (+ or -)

UCSD has excellent engineering, especially in biomedical. You being in-state and top 4% should put you in a good position (bring your SAT scores up would help). It's a great bargain with in-state tuition.

what about other schools???

The UC's don't care about your unweighted four year GPA. They only look at their own computation of your GPA - you need to figure out your UC GPA in order to guesstimate your chances. You can find details at www.ucop.edu/pathways - after you have your UC GPA, be sure to check how your test scores and GPA compare to the UC minimum scores. Depending on your UC GPA, you might have a shot at UCSB, UC Davis and UC Irvine but you'd need to significantly get those scores up for UCB, UCLA and UCSD to come within range. You might also want to take a look at UC Merced and see how their engineering programs will be developing over the next few years.

For other decent engineering schools in California, check out:

Reaches unless test scores go up significantly:
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
University of Southern California

Possible matches with somewhat higher SAT I scores:
Santa Clara U
San Diego State
Loyola Marymount
University of Washington

Possible matches now, with current SAT I scores:
the University of Portland
Gonzaga
Oregon STate U
U of the Pacific
Cal Poly Pomona

I heard Cal Poly SLO has pretty good undergraduate engineering program... is this true?

That is true. I believe USnews ranked it #4 nationally for schools without a Ph.D. program. You'll need around a 3.9W and a 1270(old) to get in, though. Work on that SAT math and it's probable you will be admitted.

*3.65 UW 4.98/6.33 W
*SAT I 2090 (retaking in oct) SAT II 790 math1c 780 math2c 770 bioE 750 us hist
*ACT scores n/a
*unknown (around top 10%)
*new jersey
*lots of ecs, extracurriculars, good essays, and good recs (or better)

im also looking for a good school with a top engineering program that i can get into...

just something that i am capable of getting into and on the same hand has a great rep. and good alum support
