schools for composition/performance double major

Son is a junior. Looking at schools where he can double major in cello performance along with composition or at least keep studying and playing cello at a very high level. As we visit and research schools we are finding it is not so easy to do both. And is is not always clear from websites.

Of schools we have seen he loves Eastman and Oberlin. Visiting CIM, Univ. of Michigan, Lawrence, Indiana and Northwestern soon. Visited Hartt, Boston Con., Bowdoin, Baldwin Wallace, NEC. He liked NEC. We also might look at Ithaca and Rice. We live in northeast and prefer he not go past mid west.

Any suggestion where you can do both? Or at least get to play a lot. Still reasearching the mentioned schools for clear answers. Thanks. Been lurking for a while.

CalArts offers a performer/composer major, but that’s a long way past midwest.

Cornish offers a performer/composer major as well…but again…looong way from home. There are a lot of great schools in Ohio i’d check out; CIM, CCM, Oberlin you mentioned

I don’t know if you’re actually allowed to double major in both performance and composition, but I know Illinois Wesleyan offers both of those majors…just check that you could actually do both, because of the requirements, and I’m not sure how different they are. I’m going to IWU this fall as a performance major.
