Schools for Creative Writing & English

I'm wondering what would be the best and other good schools if I'm an aspiring writer interested in writing literary fiction. I go to a private school and am taking the toughest courses available to me, so the top schools are a possibility for me. What schools should I look at?

My friend is a CW major. She applied to Columbia, Brown, and Johns Hopkins as her top choices.

UC Irvine is supposed to be quite good too. And USC.

There are not really that many schools with a formal creative writing program at the undergrad level, so that would probably be a good place to start. I know Iowa and NYU have very good programs.

I believe Denison and Kenyon have creative writing programs.

Columbia, Brown, and JHU all sound good (and I have legacy at Columbia, which could always help). Since those are all basically reaches, what are some matches and safeties?

Also I'm not so sure that I'd want to go to a liberal arts school, it just doesn't appeal to me. I like the idea of a medium university, in a city or suburban area, and preferably not in the West/California. I don't like the warm, I prefer the cool/cold much more.

NYU has a really good creative writing program, and it seems like it may be a school you would want to look at.

Also, if you are interested in screenwriting or possibly playwriting, the Tisch School at NYU has one of the best dramatic writing programs in the entire country, but it's very hard to get into. I believe they only accept 200 students every year. To apply you must have a pretty good portfolio of writing projects. Satires, essays, screenplays, etc. One of my best friends was just accepted in and she's really excited to go :)

Per student, Bard has by far the most robust creative writing faculty (far more than any of the Ivies.)

NYU sounds interesting, and according to my profile at Princeton Review it's a Good Match for me.

But Bard is a just a no. In the first place I really would like to be at a university, not a LAC, in a city, and Bard is a rural LAC. Also, Bard is notorious for having no library. I need a big, research library, because I do have other interests past writing like politics and history.

Anyway, any other Matches or Safeties you guys could suggest?

Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkikns University

My D, who will be double majoring in Creative Writing and Psychology, found programs she liked at Skidmore, U Chicago and U Michigan...will be at U Michigan this fall.

I don't know how it compares to other schools, but since you mentioned liking cold, I had a great experience in Cornell's creative writing program. There's a list of hundreds of writers on their website that have come out of Cornell, plus Cornell is a very diverse mix of theoretical and practical, so you can study something else to shore up your finances until you write the great American novel.
