I want to major in Special Education. Preferably, some place that's affordable or is able to give out a lot of money.

What state?
Any particular student population that interests you?

U of Oregon is good as is Minnesota.

Peabody College at Vanderbilt is very good, too, but I don’t know that a lot of FA is available.

New York or somewhere close to there.
I would prefer a small-medium sized school :)

TCNJ
Well-known for education, about 6000 students.

How prestigious are they?

In which state do you live? Do you want to seek certification to teach there? Teacher education programs in one’s own state may be the best bet for financial and ertification reasons.

I live in New York. Hmm, you do have a point there.

SUNY Geneseo is considered one of the Best for education.

The undergrad special ed program at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College is ranked first in the nation.
Actually, Vanderbilt’s financial aid program is excellent for students with demonstrated need, and its merit aid program is quite generous as well (though difficult to qualify for). According to the Vanderbilt Finaid webpage, “financial aid packages awarded to incoming and returning undergraduate students beginning in the fall of 2009 will not include need-based loans. The amount of need-based loans students would have been offered in the past to meet demonstrated financial need will now be replaced with increased amounts of Vanderbilt scholarship and/or grant (gift) assistance.”

OP, since you’re in New York, have you thought about LeMoyne College in the Syracuse area? They have an extensive special ed program.

I assume this is in regard to TCNJ, which is well regarded within the state of NJ, particularly for education.

TCNJ is similar in many ways to SUNY Geneseo, which if you are from NY, would be much less expensive.

You live in NY. You want to become a teacher. Seriously consider the SUNY schools. Many have 5-year BS/MS Ed programs that allow you to earn your undergrad, Masters, and NYS Certification within 5 years.

^Geneseo (you need to have very good academic stats to gain acceptance into SUNY Geneseo)

There’s actually USNWR rankings for education.

For education in general:

For special education:

Arcadia in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA is well-known for education. They also have a great international study program. Overall, the school in not nationally ranked, but the education program is nationally ranked.

The OP lives in NY. It makes sense to get the Education degree from a NY college. It makes the path to certification easier. Many SUNY’s began as Teaching Colleges. If the student wants to teach in NYS, I highly recommend looking into the SUNY schools.
