Looking for schools that would have similar feel to Colby, but are easier to get into. D loves Colby, likes Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Haverford.

Schools that I am encouraging her to consider are Dickinson, Rochester, Wheaton, William and Mary.

She wants to stay in the northeast, wants outdoor activity opportunities, prefers little/no Greek life. Prefers a school with down to earth type student body. Not so interested in women's colleges.

Since you listed Dickinson, I assume PA is on the table as well. Since that’s the case, I would suggest Franklin and Marshall. I’m not sure about whether or not it has Greek life, but it fits all the other criteria.

Also, you may be aware of this, but William and Mary is rather difficult to get into out of state from what I understand.

thanks, thinker. Yes, we are including PA in our definition of northeast! Franklin and Marshall is a good idea. D1 and I visited two years ago, on the same day as our visit to Dickinson. D2 and I should do that. D2 is a little worried about the Greek life at Dickinson.

Yes, just discovered yesterday that W&M is much tougher to get into OOS. So, I guess it can’t really be considered a match because of the low acceptance rate.

My D was accepted at Dickinson and visited twice, although she ultimately decided to go to school in the Midwest. She preferred the midwest vibe over northeast. She really liked Dickinson (so did I). Neither of us got the sense that frats/sororities dominated campus like at some other schools, although more girls seemed to get involved than guys. Had her first choice not come through, she probably would’ve gone to Dickinson. We both recommend it.

Another PA school to consider is Muhlenberg College.

thanks, Plainsman. I’m happy to hear how it felt for you at Dickinson. I have to say, that was how D1 and I felt, and D1 was similarly averse to Greek life. Dickinson seemed like the kind of place that D1 would have found her “people”. However, she chose another school where she is very happy.

I wish D2 would consider the midwest. I think that the student body at many schools in the midwest is what she is looking for. However, she is reluctant to be more than about 7 hours drive from home.
