Rochester’s become pretty selective. My D, who’s a legacy at Rochester was waitlisted there but accepted EA at Bard. It helps tremendously at Bard if you apply EA - I think they accept between 60 - 65% of their EA candidates.

i dont know if she’d consider A. california, or B. all girls, but what about Mills? a bastion of liberal politically active women. Pitzer for coed.
marlboro, but might be too isolated. and too white?
Ithaca maybe?

FYI - - Four of Gouchers requirements MUST be satisfied by individual courses that do not satisfy other requirements, and in some cases more than one cours (2 Eng classes, 3 lang courses, study abroad, math). Bottom line, its at least 9 courses (NOT including the study abroad) and that’s assuming that all courses that satisfy multiple requirements are available to a students. That’s a lot of requirements.

Rochester is a great school, but I’m looking for match/safeties.

Look at Wheaton in Mass, Muhlenberg in PA, Sarah Lawrence, UNC Ashville, Coastal Atlantic in NC, Marlboro, Hampshire,Ohio Wesleyan, some of the SUNYs (Fredonia, Purchase),Pace (NYC), Emerson, Simmons, Millsap, Lake Forest, StOLafs, Lawrence,

I’m not seeing a whole lot of overlap between Goucher and Millsap / St. Olaf’s / Ohio Wesleyan / Lake Forest, some very “mainstream”/middle-of-the-road type of schools. YMMV. Otherwise second cptofthehouse’s suggestions to various extents–especially take a look at Muhlenberg and UNC-Asheville.

I realize that this doesn’t make much difference in the total # of gen ed requirements at Goucher, but I don’t think it’s true that a required course could not be completed abroad. For example, intermediate Spanish could be completed in a 3-week intensive course in Cuernavaca, Mexico – the course catalogue says: “Satisfactory completion of SP 130 in Cuernavaca fulfills the foreign language requirement.”

Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin (where I am headed next year) fits all your requirements. It does not have set specific courses required for graduation outside of one’s major, but does require 2 Humanity Courses, two social science courses and 2 science courses. I didn’t find any students complaining about these requirements and most said that there are both science courses that cater to less sciency/mathy people and humanity courses that cater to mathy/science people, so don’t worry about that. It is slightly more selective then Goucher, but if you are top quarter of you class and have a 26+ ACT 1700+ SAT, you are in good shape to be admitted.

Others I looked at that are similar are Grinnell (Open Curriculum and My first choice), Macalester, Kenyon, Knox, Cornell College and Lawrence.

Beloit, Knox, Cornell and Lawrence are all Colleges that Change Lives which I assume you are familiar with as all your other choices are apart of that book.

Depends on your perspective.

The Mennonites are one of the historic “peace churches”, along with the Church of the Brethren and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). They have a long-standing commitment to non-violence and peace. Some Mennonite groups also are very active in relief service.

I’d be interested in how it compares to a traditional Quaker college such as Earlham.

Bryn Mahr College in PA

Bryn Mahr College in Pa. It is near Villanova

^ Bryn Mawr.

tk21769: My impression was that the Mennonite and the Brethren are both significantly more conservative denominations than Quaker, which is often close to UU (Unitarian Universalist) on the liberal-conservative spectrum. At least the Quakers I know.

cptofthehouse - - UNC-Asheville, Hampshire. Wheaton and Ohio Wesleyan are all under consideratin, but in the match/reach category, as opposed to the match/saftey category, which is what I’m looking for now.

Ditto for Beloit. And I’m trying to get D to consider Simmons and maybe Lesley (but as I posted earlier, she wants more of a residential experience - -and she doesn’t like Boston; too big to be cute/quaint, but with none of the city amenities she loves).

Muhlenberg is artsy, but not necessarily lefty. Marlboro is too small.

Thanks all for the suggestions, but few of the schools are similar to Goucher in terms of selectivity (Bryn Mawr? Kenyon Grinnell? Mac? are you kiddin"!!).

Was curious how Franklin & Marshall compares to Goucher in terms of academics and campus culture/politics? Also, anyone want to weigh in on Bennington vs Goucher? These are schools that my d is considering, including Goucher (and Bard and Marlboro).

Thx!

Yes. Mennonites have maintained a “plain” lifestyle long after most modern Quakers abandoned it. Nevertheless, today many Mennonites have abandoned it too, or so it seems based on my casual observations. I’ve no idea what the atmosphere is like at Goshen. It might be very similar to Earlham’s so I’d say, at least check it out if you need more options.

Bryn Mawr, I think, is going to be much more selective than Goucher (with average MV SATs >1400, compared to Goucher at <1300). So is Macalester, though it definitely has that “lefty, hipster, social justice” vibe. You might be able to find data on what other schools are attractive to kids who apply to Mac. Perhaps they’d include some schools that are off the beaten bi-coastal paths.

Mills College may be a little less selective than Goucher. No, it does not meet all criteria. In particular, it’s an all women’s college. However, it’s just outside SF and very close to UC Berkeley. If nothing else, it is in a far, far more exciting location than Towson MD. A location that is practically the Vatican of “lefty, hipster, social justice” vibes.

I know someone who grew up on a commune then went to Mills and loved it. One of her siblings (who is the very definition of “l, h, sj”) went to Goucher for a year in the 1990s, hated it, and dropped out.

I know a number of Goshen grads. None of them are overly religious or follow any Amish-like practices.

One is now a professor, one is in real estate after a career as a radio announcer, and a third has an organic farm in Vermont after living in NYC with some sort of degree in social work.

I’ve also been to the campus, which has a very midwestern feeling and a train track running down the middle.

How about College of Charleston? I’m not sure about its requirements or whether it is sufficiently alternative, but acceptance-wise it is in the same ballpark as Goucher.

Yes, beware of stereotypes. We know a whole bunch of Quakers. None of them looks a bit like the Oats guy.

Evergreen, definitely. One hour to Seattle and Portland.
