Has Haverford been suggested?

I know several Goshen grads and they were conservative Christians who felt the school wasnât conservative enough. However, I would make a distinction between social justice and personal behavior. While I am sure the school has a strong social justice component, the people I know who attended would have a traditional Christian viewpoint on premarital sex, pot usage, etc that is far right of the Goucher students Iâve known. If my child were considering Goshen and was not a conservative Christian, I would check out housing rules and talk to a lot of students.

Of the Goshen grads I know, two were international students who attended Goshen because they received scholarships.

One was religious, the other was not at all.

The third grad was an interesting case â his parents were traditional Mennonites, for example, they would not use buttons. But he himself was quite secular by the time I met him (in graduate school).

Definitely Bard

Though Iâm not Mennonite, I grew up in a predominantly Mennonite area. Goshen was a popular college choice of kids at my high school. The most religious kids probably preferred Eastern Mennonite, but unless things there have really changed a LOT, I canât imagine that this school would be left-leaning. Mennonites are pacifists and their young men take the conscientious objector route if drafted. Other than that, theyâre a pretty conservative lot. And, the OP would like a black presence. I have never in my life met a black Mennonite, though Iâm sure there are some. But Mennonites in the Virginia and PA region are generally of Germanic ancestry.

OP: Your D sounds alot like mine. Sheâs going to Earlham (âengaging a changing worldâ) in the fall, but she also liked Muhlenberg, Colorado College, and Whitman. Iâve heard of students trying to decide between Earlham and Macalester.

Look for the book âCool Collegesâ. Lists lots of schools for the more quirky, artsy individual kid at all selectivity levels.

Goshen is not âlefty hipsterâ.
