D was accepted at Occidental for Fall 2011. I will be taking her to visit. S (highschool freshman) wants to come. If I can, I'd like to visit some schools for him while we're out there, but I'm wondering how realistic that is. He's been asking about UCSD, but his grades are not great -- B-/C+. Good baseball player. Nice kid. Should I just let him see Oxy with D and do his visits later when I have more info on his? I want to kind of inspire him with "if you get better grades you too can go to a school like this..."

I've been hearing how hard it is for OOS to get into the California schools...

Congrats to your D; Oxy seems to be a very good school. My son is only a sophomore, and we plan on going to Southern Cal this summer to look at schools between basketball camps. Some in the general area that are on our list besides the Claremonts are Chapman, Loyola Marymount, USC, University of Redlands, and University of San Diego. Pepperdine is fairly close, also. We are not looking at any state schools, as we are out of state. Some of those locations may get him motivated to think more about going to college, and maybe you could ask to speak to the baseball coach at the smaller schools so he could tell your son what he needs to do to go to college AND play baseball.
