Which schools are like Colby? In terms of location, size, feel, academics?

Bowdoin's an obvious one.

Thanks!

Bowdoin's an obvious one.

I've heard Hamilton College (NY), and to some extent Connecticut College. Both of the New England/New York LAC breed, ~2000 students (Conn might have more like 1900 or so), solid academics. As for specific location, Hamilton is in a college town (Clinton) and Conn is in a larger city (New Haven). As for feel, I couldn't give you details, since I'm just a prospective student and I've only been to visit Conn (my brother visited Hamilton).

Hope this helps.

I'd agree about Hamilton. Middlebury, Williams and Dartmouth are also in rural or small town New England environments with strong academics and sports programs. Those three are somewhat more selective in admissions but admissions can be quirky at this level and it would probably be a mistake to rule any of them out or consider any a sure thing.

Schools like Colby:

Less selective
Bates

About as selective:
Colgate (slightly more), Hamilton

More selective:
Middlebury, Bowdoin

Much more selective:
Williams, Dartmouth, Amherst

I think LaMariposaAzul meant to say that Conn is in New London, not New Haven.

Oooops, I did. Thanks for catching that one!

I would not count on Bates being less selective than Colby. In fact, Bates' current admission rate (29%) is lower than Colby's (32%) and its SAT range is virtually identical (avg for both is about 2050). They are very, very similar in admissions.

^Yeah, I would say Bates and Colby are about the same selectivity-wise. For similar, somewhat less selective schools, I would look at Bucknell, Union, Lafayette, Franklin & Marshall.

Im a student at Colby currently, and I would say that Bates and Middlebury are most similar. But, I would also check Bowdoin and Williams out.

This is for feel and quality. Selectivity is a different factor, based partly on the marketability of the school. Schools similar to Colby:
Amherst
Bowdoin
Bates
Bucknell
Colgate
Dartmouth
Hamilton
Middlebury
Williams

Colby's "Overlaps" in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2009 are Bowdoin, Middlebury, Bates, Dartmouth, Williams, and Tufts.

what are my chances of getting into colby wiht full aid?

Financial aid to Colby is going to be determined by your demonstrated need; not test scores and grades.

I would say you have a decent shot to be accepted scores and grades wise, but a lot more factors are involved, so it could easily go either way.

ya rite gellino but they will only accept and give me financial aid if they really want me to b a part of colby and that goes down to grades

Im currently a student at Colby, and I would recommend checking out Midd, Bates, Bowdoin, Hamilton, and Williams.

I would say that Bates is way more selective than Colby, and its also more heard of.

A couple of factors to bear in mind when comparing Colby's and Bates's selectivity: Bates had an uncharacteristically low admit rate last year, partly because they admitted half the class ED. Bates attracts a similar pool of applicants to Colby, but enrolls 50 fewer students (which means admitting 150-200 fewer); all things being equal this makes their admit rate look lower. And Bates is SAT-optional, which inflates their reported scores.

In a holistic process, it's dangerous to rely too much on the numbers, but the schools are roughly comparable in selectivity, with Colby probably slightly more selective.

Bates is a fine school but it's not more selective than Colby and certainly not better known, at least on the planet where I live.

Well in the planet that I live on (The UK) it is more well-known and much more highly regarded.

Then Bates may be the better choice for you, particularly if you intend to return to the UK after graduation. It is, as I said, a fine school. Some choose it over Colby and many choose Colby over Bates . In making any decision you should at least be aware of the realities of reputation, selectivity, endowment (Bates has a significantly lower endowment, or at least did before the recent market downturn) here in the US where we are much closer to these colleges. Their reputations are probably very similar with graduate schools and employers in the US. If one is ranked slightly higher I think it's Colby, but the differences have more to do with intangibles like atmosphere, campus, and a student's own comfort level than reputation.
