Looking at the list of criteria and thinking of schools that meet need, think about adding Cornell as a reach. You can’t major in accounting, but it’s a field you can focus on within the Dyson school.
Unfortunately the LGBT community bit is important, I don’t want to be discriminated against. The LGBT community doesn’t have to be huge, just there to some extent and accepted by the wider community. I am willing to compromise on size and the other criteria, besides accounting.
@Hanna Isn’t Cornell an Ivy? Is it wise to apply to a school that’s such a reach for almost anyone?
“Is it wise to apply to a school that’s such a reach for almost anyone?”
What’s unwise about it?
In the sense that applying to Cornell is time and energy that could be spent elsewhere, when my stats are not in their range. I realize that you never know if you don’t try, but I’m highly unlikely to get in even if I were to apply ED
Cornell, UMass Amherst, and USC will all be gay-friendly.
Elmhurst is very LGBTQ-friendly but I don’t know if they have your major.
NYU is very LGBTQ-friendly but its financial aid is often lousy, making the school totally unaffordable.
UIUC can at least provide top 10 accounting, large school in small city, beautiful campus (admittedly subjective) and Greek life. Also near Bloomington, IN so I would think they’d be similar in other ways too.
You’re an A-minus student with a 32 ACT. That’s not out of range for the Ag school. Bear in mind that we at CC don’t know anything about your high school, your recommendations, your activities, whether you are a first-generation college student, etc., so you have a lot more information. But based on your numbers, this is a reach, not a waste of time. And we’re not talking about much time if you plan out your supplements well – often the same piece can be tweaked for more than one school.
Here is some more information:
I’m a first gen college student.
My high school is a college prep school. My course load is not the most challenging offered at all, though I have taken six classes for almost all four years. I had health issues last year that kept me out of school for a semester, but I was able to self study Precalculus and Latin III and move into Differential Calculus and Latin IV. My history class this year is an independent research study on financial literacy.
I think my recommendations will be positive. I had an A in both of my recommender’s classes and had the highest grade in one of them (the other did not ‘rank’). I’ve been in their classes for four years and they both have written many positive things about me in my midterm reports.
Some activities:
Theater - 12 years, for the last four years I’ve been the stage manager which carries a lot of responsibility
Technology Club: Started the club in my school, now has 15 members (my school is small). We’ve hosted coding events.
Self studied Spanish and am conversational in it.
On average 50 hours of volunteering a month, though that increases during the summer.
Youth advisory board for my local government
I’ve been sponsored by online fashion companies and have received free clothes and discounts.

I think you do have a shot at the CFAN program in agricultural economics at UMinnesota and perhaps at McGill. Probably not Cornell due to course rigor but you can try. UIUC should be a given, apply soon.
Resource Economics at UMass Amherst is a good possibility and the town/area is both very LGBTQ friendly but also has a good dating pool.

For economics, you’d have a LOT of choices. For Agricultural Economics, fewer, because those are in the Ag College and not all universities have it, and among those not all are LGBT-friendly (Wyoming and Montana are crossed out because of it.)
I’m not interested in Ag economics… I’m interested in accounting
Wait, did you say accounting? Because that’s an entirely different program and one where it’s very very difficult to double major in.
I never said I wanted to double major. I said I wanted to major in accounting and hopefully minor in a foreign language.

And Florida State…you’d probably get to pay the in-state tuition rate.
@moooop Are they LGBT friendly?
