What are some schools that you think might share some similarities with Vanderbilt?

Emory, Rice, Duke, and UVA come to mind - great academics at well-respected, mid-sized schools in the south. They are all rather different socially. Merit aid is also available at all of them, though the programs are very limited, particularly at Duke and UVA (Jefferson Scholars only there, I believe).

Emory and Duke also come to mind for me too.

I used to think Rice and Vanderbilt were similar, but I no longer think they are. They are both excellent and both in the south, but the differences are great. I am quite familiar with both. Rice has no frats and no law/med school so it has a much smaller feel. Vandy has a much more fun athletic scene since it is in the SEC.

People often comment that they're looking at Emory and Vanderbilt and I've never understood why. Both terrific colleges, but beyond the fact that both are in the South and are of similar size, these are pretty different places.

Same with Rice and Vanderbilt. I like both schools very much, but MOWC is absolutely right that these are not that similar.

Schools that I would most equate Vanderbilt to would include in terms of their selectivity and the kinds of kids you find at each:

Top tier: Stanford, Princeton, Duke

Middle tier: U Virginia (OOS students), U North Carolina (OOS), Georgetown, Northwestern (sort of), Notre Dame, Cornell (sort of), Davidson

Next tier: Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Tulane

Next tier: U Georgia, U Alabama, U Florida (a stretch), SMU

I would consider Northwestern to be more on par with Duke, as well as Rice. I'm not sure where you get off putting Stanford and Princeton with Duke, which have much lower acceptance rates than Duke which is usually in the low-mid 20s. Also, SMU can't really compare with Florida, and putting Georgia and Florida near Alabam is somewhat of an insult. But I do agree that Rice and Vanderbilt aren't similar at all.

When I think Vanderbilt, I think of Duke, UNC, Emory, UVA, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Michigan, Cornell in terms of selectivity, academics and prestige.

hawkette's Post #5: Is very accurate, in my opinion. The University of Alabama is very similiar to Vanderbilt, especially when looking at Alabama's Honors College. Washington & Lee also has similarities to the frat party side & academics of Vanderbilt.
