What are some good MT schools that don’t have a horrible dance call? I have no formal dance training, but my acting and singing make up for it. What are some good schools that don’t have as much emphasis on dance?
Several schools do not have dance calls at the unifieds. Manhattan School of Music and University of the Arts are two. They do, however, have a dance curriculum if admitted and include great training in dance.
Carnegie Mellon and Marymount Manhattan are two more that do not require dance at the audition (although there’s dance in the curriculum once you’re accepted, obviously!)
Marymount Manhattan had a fairly lengthy dance call when my daughter auditioned this year, although she didn’t think it was all that difficult. She said the hardest dance calls were Point Park, Pace and CCM.
Two audition seasons ago, UArts didn’t have a dance call at Unifieds, but they did require a choreographed (by the student or a dance teacher) dance piece in the audition. Was that the same this past year?
Oh, I didn’t realize that, @CTDramaMom! The “musical theater audition” info on the Marymount website doesn’t mention dance at all! Thanks for letting us know!
This past winter UArts at NYC Unified (January) didn’t have a dance call but Marymount on campus (November) did. Marymount, however, said it was for “placement”.
@catladylark, in addition to the information about which schools do, or do not, have a dance call, you might want to look at which schools offer several levels of their dance curriculum. This will be important if you have no dance training, which is going to put you in a distinct minority in MT programs.
I wouldn’t let a dance call stop you from applying to a school you are interested in. My D was like you, no formal training, and she got accepted at a school which is notorious for having one of the hardest dance calls (BoCo). The acting and singing can make up for the lack of dance skills at some schools.
