Does anyone have any insight into why some schools ask applicants to list other schools to which they plan to apply? Is it preferable to simply not answer?

I believe it is for scholarships. Say you apply to School 1 and they see you are also applying to School 2 and School 3. School 2 and School 3 happen to be School 1’s biggest threat. They might give out a scholarship to you since they find your application to be great (hopefully, on your part it really is :)! ) which will possibly make you favor School 1 over Schools 2 and 3. If that makes sense at all.

Rice university asked to list schools applied, Son decided against applying to Rice instead. I supported his decision. It is none of Rice’ business to know where else he applied to.

Schools like to see where they might rank-one person’s safety is another’s dream school. it also helps them see who candidates consider their peers. It doesn’t hurt to ignore the question, or to name one of two schools.

Students change their applications at the last minute; go with MizzBee said and either ignore the question or name 1 or 2 schools and not necessarily all of them.
