I know that when my S1 was weighing his acceptances last April, at least one school (RIT) told us that they would consider matching merit aid offers from other comparable schools. He ended up choosing a different school, so we didn't pursue it, so I don't know how likely they would have been to actually do it.

But... I was wondering if there are schools people know of that are "known to" be at least open to matching merit aid offers, either from "comparable schools" in general or from a particular list of peer institutions.

It seems like this type of information could complement information about schools that offer guaranteed merit aid or tend to offer generous merit aid.

Some colleges will sometimes match FA offers, IF the higher offer is from what they consider to be a “peer” college [ think Brown and Dartmouth] AND if they really want the student. Merit only scholarships are usually not matched. Most colleges wont even consider doing so.

I did ask RIT specifically and they did say they would “consider” matching merit with peer institutions. S had better merit-only offers from Drexel and Northeastern (which both offer full tuition to NMFs). As I said, we didn’t pursue further because he ultimately made a different choice. I know one of his friends did get his RIT offer improved based on a better offer from another school (and ultimately went to RIT) but I don’t know what combination of merit and need that friend had.
