I'm going into my Junior year of high school, and wish to major in psychology. I'm a member of Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Show Choir combo, and a marching band student leader, a wind ensemble section leader, and a jazz band lead player as well. I am also a member of Mock Trial, FOR club, and hopefully will be inducted to NHS this fall. I have an unweighted GPA of 3.61, an ACT of 26 (first time, blind,) and eventually plan to pursue a doctoral degree.

My mom is very passionate about me coming out of school without debt, but with only 40,000 dollars for college total, I'm not sure if that's going to happen. I live in Ohio, (central, so no reciprocity,) and have already seen the University of Kentucky, University of Miami, Bowling Green State University, and Ohio University (which I didn't love.)

What colleges should I see, either in or out of state, that have good scholarship programs, (I'm hoping to get my ACT score up this winter,) and low tuition? I feel like I haven't seen enough schools even though I'm planning on seeing University of Akron, and University of Toledo as well.

Thank you in advance!

What’s your intended major, OP?

Have any colleges shown any interest in your musical and marching talents? Don’t worry, it’s early.

Have you run the net price calculators at any of the schools you mention? You’ll need you mom and dad’s financial information to do this. They will suggest what schools are likely to expect your family to pay.

It might be a bit early to be visiting more colleges if you don’t know where you might and won’t get in and where you can afford. Run those net price calculators and come back to us.

Sounds like intended major is Psych. Good plan to minimize your debt, as it is not a high paying job market. The Ohio State University seems pretty obvious, have you visited? Large, but supposed to be pretty good Psych (per Fiske, I haven’t looked any farther than that). And a pretty darned great marching band (and I say this with grudging respect, as a former Michigan Marching Band member…) for someone who might want to continue that EC in college.

Psychology is my intended major, and I’ve thought about minoring in music performance, I’m just not sure.

No, they haven’t, but I have gotten mail from The Ohio State University about their camps and workshops for high school music students, in which they’ll talk about whether you’d be suited for the University’s music program or not, (but OSU wasn’t something I was looking at due to expenses.)

I have run net price calculators, and Bowling Green is looking at the only one in my price range with my current score, but Miami looks doable with a couple of more points on my ACT score, or a good SAT score.

Yes, I have looked at OSU, but it’s much to large for my liking, and I’m not quite sure if I’m marching in college yet anyway. Plus, being a Michigan football fan, I feel like that wouldn’t go over well there haha.

Thank you so much!

Both BGSU and MU are good schools, OP, with lots of opportunities for getting involved in clubs, research, internships. I apologize for missing your major. Psychology is a changing field right now with a lot of directions you could investigate. I has long been a social science with connections to the biological; more and more, lately, it is becoming a biological science with connections to the social sciences. What’s your relationship with science and math like?

It’s totally fine! And I really like Bowling Green and Miami. I would consider both math and science as strong points in school, I’m going into Honors Pre Calculus and Honors Chemistry this fall, and plan on taking Physics, AP Calculus, and Statistics senior year. Also, since a minor is required for psychology majors at BGSU, I’ve considered Chemistry as my minor.

Good! Those are good course choices for the next two years if you intend to major in psychology.

Miami U will have a graduate program in neuroscience and behavior, which means that they’ll have some resources for their neuroscience minors program. You’ll still have to check, as you would at any university, about the opportunity u/gs have for research in that program; sometimes the grad students get all the attention in such situations, and at other universities the u/gs are welcome to vie for work and attention.

At BGSU there’s a neuroscience major and a Center for Neuroscience, Mind, and Behavior, where “majors are strongly urged to take independent research courses with neuroscience faculty.”

There are private colleges in OH with neurosci as well.
